alright, with the new hobbit thing I think it was time I dusted off my old rohan army. only thing is, after playing a small game, I don't really know how my calvary works...

-do throwing spears get tossed away after the first shot? and can they be used as regular spears?

-can you have an entire army of calary? and do they still have bows?

Throwing spears I believe still count as unlimited. Not sure you can use them as normal spears though.

You can have an army of cavalry but you need the foot versions as well should your horse`s be killed and the rider survived ie you need an infantryman per horseman. They still have bows but only a third of your force can have them ie every one model in three

I dint have my books on my at the moment but will have a look later on

Same as you would any supporting model with spears. Its only real benefits for the goblins of goblin town are the extra attack for a supporting model. If using rohan with the charge distances you have you could pick and choose your fights really

hmmm okay. but also, does the knock to the ground thing effect those behind the first row?

Why does it suck? models knocked to the ground are treated as trapped. ouchtime.

An effective stratergy would be never forget your throwing spears! they will open up ranks allowing you to charge directly at the supporting models (spears / chitteringhoards) and if there is a large group of units that you will get bogged down if you charge, avoid them, use your speed of movement to draw them out into a chase.

Mainly found in the LOTR section.....

okay, how about a mounted/foot list? should I have my foot soldiers engage the front line, and the Calvary swoop around to take down the back?

maybe as you posted, rarmah, have some archers or spear throwers take down the front lines?

That actually sounds pretty effective. Rohan models are cheap as chips and so you could easily have a lot of guys. Throwing Spears are amazing, so throw a few in as you charge. Also, shoot up enemies in the previous turn. I'd hide your Riders behind hills and trees to avoid them getting shot before swooping in as your enemy engages. For these purposes, it's sometimes a good idea to do this when you have lost priority - you can react to your enemies movements.

1) You always count as having unlimited throwing spears (or rather 'enough throwing spears to last the battle'). You can throw them as you charge in (counting as a normal shooting attack) or can throw them normally in which case, iirc, they have a 6" range.

2) You can have an entire army of cavalry (and I'd recommend it, in fact) although only a third of the models in your army may use bows.

As for strategy, always try and split your opponent up. Rohan will always lose a fight if they can be surrounded by enemies, so charging into some guy with three of his buddies behind him is a bad idea. However, if you can catch a bunch of models on their own (i.e. you can charge in without being counter-charged) then the odds are in your favour. If you win the fight, you'll knock them prone and get double attacks, making it much easier to kill stuff. With captains and special characters, this is amazing, since you're doubling a much higher amount. For example, if Eomer knocks someone prone he gets 6 dice to try and kill. So, statistically, you're still guaranteed a kill even if you need a 6.

To help split your opponent up, make good use of your mobility. Being able to move much faster than your opponent is a great bonus as you can force them to split up to come after you. Stuff like Outriders with bows are fantastic for harassing the enemy and they can ensure that your opponent won't leave them alone (since they're pretty good shots)

hmmmm okay, that sounds good!

don't have enough of calary for a whole army (250pts worth) and Planning on going into a tournement today.

i'll tell you guys how it went when I'm done!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
alright, I won the tourney! (there where only me and another guy, but I still won 2 games!)

so, didn't really use throwing spears, but I ended up swarming the enemy infantry with my riders. Got behind the ranks and just kept knocking people down. I played against Gondor both times.

1st game list!

Erkenbrand on a horse
Rohan captain on foot w/ shield and heavy armor
Huntsman of rohan

x11 riders of rohan (all had Erkenbrand's upgrade, 3 had bows)
x3 Sons of Erol
x3 bowmen

I didn't really like this last that much. I felt that the sons of erol where too many points for what they did in my game (die first) and I had too little infantry presence. also learned not to take infantry bowmen.

2nd game list!:
Erkenbrand on a horse
Rohan captain on a horse with spear
Huntsmaster
x14 Riders of Rhoan (x6 had bows, x3 had throwing spears)
x14 warriors of Rohan (all had shields, 4 had spears)

I liked this a lot more. With my riders getting attacked first, the infantry swung around and attacked his. only problem was that bows and spears dont really do that much.

I was thinking of changing the 6 bowmen calvary into the outriders. would that be a good idea?

Definitely, if you want bows, stick them on outriders. That extra ease of hitting does make a lot of difference and the extra courage is nice too. Make sure you stick them on horses though!

I did and they are 1 point less than the riders of the westfold!

also, would grimbold be a good choice for another hero? he's as cheap as a regular captain, and he can make all my warriors strength 4

I'm don't really know Rohan that well, but what's the catch with Grimbold?

Grimbold is a 55pt character with a two handed axe, but like erkenbrand, he gives the option to improve warriors of rohan.

He makes warriors str 4 for +1 point each.

alright, sweet!

then, I would have fight skill 4 riders of rohan, and strength 4 warriors.

Only trouble is, In the past 2 games I like to use my riding archers as a 2nd wave of support. they ride slowly go forwards, shooting arrows at the enemy while the other riders get engaged in combat.

Later on, if my first wave gets a little too overwhelmed, they charge into combat to encircle and support
