Hey guys, sorry I'm still a real newb at this game.

Looking at the rulebook I'm seeing that a flyer has a combat speed of 18" and a cruising speed of 36", and can never fly under 18".

If you flew either your combat speed or your cruising speed, you can fire four of your weapons up to full BS.

So, besides the distance you move, is there a difference between moving 18" and 36"? It doesn't seem like you are penalized for moving faster than combat speed (>18". But if they are exactly the same, what's the point of the two names?

Halp!

Im not sure... my rulebook's in the wind, so to speak. But i think its to do with them being shot at.

I don't see any difference here. On page BRB.81 it says that "shots at a zooming flyer are resolved as snap shots" meaning both combat or cruising speed. Also, the speed you fly doesn't seem to have any bearing on evade.

It only matters, really, for Locked Velocity

I might be understanding the movement incorrectly. The rules say that if a flyer zooms, it has a combat speed of 18" and a cruising speed of 36". Does that mean that a flyer can only move either 18" OR 36" (and nothing in between) or does that mean a flyer can move BETWEEN 18"-36"?

ok I just read the FAQ and it says "If a Flyer Zooms, it has a
Combat Speed of 18" and a Cruising Speed of up to 36"." meaning that a zooming flyer moves BETWEEN 18"-36". So I'm not understanding what is the difference between combat speed and cruising speed - even for locked velocity. You just move the same speed you moved when you were immobilized right?

Movement is "up to", unless it states otherwise

ok so please tell me if this is correct:

If you are going 18" (combat speed) and you become immobilized, due to locked velocity you will have to keep going 18" for the rest of the game (maintaining combat speed).

But if you are going 19" (cruising speed), and you become immobilized, due to locked velocity you will have to keep going 36" for the rest of the game (maintaining cruising speed).

And this seems to be the only difference that cruising speed and combat speed seem to make.

Is this correct?

That is correct.

The only thing the two different speeds do is the distance moved and the implications of locked velocity.

and according to the FAQ as long as you are going any speed besides combat speed, you immediately accelerate to 36" if you are immobilized. So even if you are going 18.000001", if you become immobilized your flyer suddenly jumps to 36" for the rest of the game.

I'm pretty sure this is the case in order to prevent the inevitable debate on what the "actual distance that was moved before" was. Better to fix a number than to ask players to try and remember how many inches they moved before and then move that same distance again.
