Subject: Taking my painting to the next level. Want instruction!

Hey, thanks in advance for reading this.
I am looking for an instructional type dvd for Intermediate and advanced techniques. I have been painting minis for 2 years maybe, painting is what keeps me moving forward with this hobby. I would really like a dvd format instructional video/videos to improve my skills as a painter. I use the airbrush to prime and get faint highlights then i step over to the brush to get the true detail work into my minis.
I would like to say that i am on the verge of an intermediate painter and i would like to see some progression in my work for 2013, so i have come to the Dakka forums in hopes of a direction i should start in. If anyone could give me some advise on what i should look into it would be much appreciated. Maybe tell me how you improved your skills, did you go to a friend or a local painter and sit down for a lesson or advice? Or did you find a dvd series like Hot Lead or 7 Day Army Painter to be all you needed to bring your skills to the next level? Time is no issue, money isnt a big factor either, i am just looking at my options at this time.
I would love any and all input on this topic! If you feel that something has worked for you but you cant see it helping someone else thats fine. If you feel that someone cannot learn through a dvd set thats fine too. I am open to any advice not just the expected stuff. I'm not hoping to win any golden demons, i am just hoping to gain a sense of accomplishment in the hobby i have grown to love so much.
Once again thanks for reading this long and rather boring thread.
I look forward to hearing from you all. Brock

I don't know much about painting DVDs but there is a huge selection on youtube for free (well, unless you pay for bandwidth on your internet service). One of the most well-known painter is Lest Bursley at awesomepaintjob. Likewise Ichiban studios puts out a good amount of high quality demonstration videos. One painter that has helped keep me inspired and motivated me has been Schnauserface and I think I've goten more out of his videos than even the more well-known guys. I have a huge painter's crush on him.

All of them are great painters and i have watched hours of demonstration from each. Buypainted is also one of the painters that has inspired me to paint from the youtube scene. I would like to say that i have learned what i can from those individuals, that i am ready to advance even further in my painting. Maybe this is the highest painting level i can achieve from watching others and that i need to just keep practicing, to be honest i am not sure. Which is one of the biggest reasons i have started this thread, i just want to see what people think about lessons or the like and maybe someone has had a similar experience to mine that could help me out one way or another. Either way thank you for the help.
Also for the rest of the users who view this thread i think i might be to vague in my search on here. I am looking for help with NMM (None Metallic Metal) Advanced Highlighting and Shading technique. Along with abstract distortion technique.
Again though thank you Dais

Have you taken a look at miniaturementor? I haven't seen any of their videos but they are done by some top level award winning painters so they may be the high end of painting tutorial videos. The truth is though, that you might be beyond the point at which videos can help you progress in any way except special cases.
Honestly, if you've reached the level where watching those guys work doesn't get you anywhere your probably ready to start doing some tutorials of your own and demonstrate how you have adapted methods from your inspirations to beginners.

I am thinking you are right. I have found some written tutorials on some of the more advanced techniques, however i am much more of a visual learner. So i think i was hoping that i just hadn't found the material i was looking for and this is one of the last places i had to turn haha. Thanks again for the help man

Just practice, practice and practice techniques that you feel need improvement. Like I now always try to make my first coat quite thin so having 2 layers make it look very nice.
So yeah just work on the things you have trouble with.

Cool Mini or Not has a webshop with DVD's from some of the top painters out there. Jen Haley, Natalya Melnik and Marike Reimer all have discs available.
