Hello my first post on the famous Dakka Dakka, and I want to ask a question.

I saw a lot of guides for dipping and wanted finish a project for the holidays fast. It was my first time doing dipping so I tested it out a model for sample (28mm zombie).

Model was painted only with base coats using GW foundation paints, and Dipped in MINWAX Tudor Satin. Drying time was 24 hours or so in room temperature (with approx. 60% humidity).

After 24 hours, I used Testors Dullcoat and waited an hour or so in drying. Then I saw that some parts didn't become flat. I assumed I missed few spots, so I sprayed a coat again.

Then after an hour or so, this happened:

Though the back was alright, the Paint or MINWAX got wavy, similar to water damage.

My thinking is that either I didn't let MINWAX dry long enough or I over sprayed the Dullcoat in too short intervals, but I want to make sure just in case.

Did anything similar happened to you guys?

check out army painter dips.
they spent 3+ years formulating it. ive never tried them but i hear they are great.

no point in wrecking expensive models with a cheap product.

I did a minwax test once and it took 10 days to fully dry and cure.
On top of that, Dullcoats are Lacquer based. When you spray them over an oil based paint/stain (like minwax) the solvents cause the resins to bubble.
If you want to use a spray coating, your going to have to use an Acrylic based wash.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

ummmm....yes and no. The problem is most likely that the Minwax did not fully cure. Once the minwax is fully cured you can spray what ever you like on top of it. An alternative method that will speed up your dry time is to cut the Minwax with about 25% Oderless Mineral Spirits. It acts somewhat as a reducer and will speed up your drying time. By 25% I mean so a 1:4 ratio of OMS:Minwax.

Thanks guys!

I decided to try again with more drying time for the MINWAX. If the problem still persists I'll try a brush on dull coat and if that doesn't work Army Painter.

Thank you, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

PS: Does Anyone know a safe drying time for MINWAX? Probably Over 24 hours, right?

24 hours should be okay, but at 60% humidity I'd let it dry for 48. The dullcoat shouldn't bubble up like that if it was dry. I spray dull coat over oil washes still wet for certain effects and haven't ever seen this happen to my paints. Spray can and brush shouldn't make much of a difference

I'd say make your own wash instead of staining
