So, now that I have found a few gaming stores in which I can play Warmachine and Hordes, I have begun to expand on my Protectorate of Menoth starter Box (only a tiny bit so far, but more to come). I am also interested in starting a hordes faction (Circle), which I may build along side of my Menoth... from what I can tell, the rules from the two games seem awfully similar, and only major differences would be Fury/Focus. I figure, however, that these things are important enough to be covered in the quick start rules (that come with every battlebox). Will I be missing anything, rules-wise if I do not buy the Hordes Core Rulebook? I'd rather not, if given the choice, as it would mean more money going to models, and one less rulebook to lug around... What does Dakka think: Is it entirely unnecessary to purchase both Core Rulebooks?

Pick up the 2 player Hordes set. It comes with a Hordes rulebook and the Circle base starter + Skinwalkers. There is a difference between the boxed starter and the 2 player starter. The 2 player starter has one more point since it replaces an argus with a winter argus.

You're correct that the two systems are basically indentical. The only difference is the Focus vs Fury rules and how warlocks interact with beasts. Anyone who is familiar with both systems could give you a rundown in about 5 mins if you already know Warmachine. So there isn't any reason to buy the rulebook unless want the pictures or basic model overviews.

I want to add to this as well.

You can get the rules for Fury in the starter box rules.

They are available for free on the PP website.
