How many Broadsides is the right number of Broadsides?

I'm thinking of two different variations on a Tau with Allies army, utilizing the same Tau Primary Detachment in both.

Here is the Tau side of the equation:

Tau Primary Detachment (724 points)
HQ - Commander Shas'el "Deathrain" (TL MP, Flamer, HW-BSF, MW-MT, HW-TL) - 85
Troops - 6x Fire Warriors - 60
Troops - 6x Fire Warriors - 60
Heavy Support - Broadside Team - 173
+ Broadside Shas'ui (TL Rail Gun, SMS, Advanced Stabilization System, Team Leader, HW-BSF, HW-TL)
+ Broadside Shas'ui (TL Rail Gun, SMS, Advanced Stabilization System)
Heavy Support - Broadside Team - 173
+ Broadside Shas'ui (TL Rail Gun, SMS, Advanced Stabilization System, Team Leader, HW-BSF, HW-TL)
+ Broadside Shas'ui (TL Rail Gun, SMS, Advanced Stabilization System)
Heavy Support - Broadside Team - 173
+ Broadside Shas'ui (TL Rail Gun, SMS, Advanced Stabilization System, Team Leader, HW-BSF, HW-TL)
+ Broadside Shas'ui (TL Rail Gun, SMS, Advanced Stabilization System)

Fortification - Aegis Defense Line + Quad Gun - 100

Now for one side of the coin is Grey Knights as an Allied Detachment:

GK Allied Detachment (1160 points)
HQ - Grand Master (Daemon Hammer) - 180
Elite - 10x Purifiers (4x Psycannons) - 280
Troops - 10x Strike Squad (2x Psycannons) + Razorback (Psybolt Ammo) - 270
Troops - 10x Strike Squad (2x Psycannons) + Razorback (Psybolt Ammo) - 270
Heavy Support - Nemesis Dreadknight (Heavy Incinerator) - 160

And for the other side of the coin is Necrons as an Alled Detachment:

Necrons Allied Detachment (1175 points)
HQ - Necron Overlord (Warscythe, Ressurection Orb) - 130
Royal Court - (Harbinger of Despair {Veil of Darkness}) - 60
Troops - 20x Warriors + Night Scythe - 360
Troops - 15x Warriors + Night Scythe - 295
Fast Attack - 6x Wraiths (3x Whip Coil) - 240
Heavy Support - Annihilation Barge - 90

The Tau/GK army is 1984 points (could add some Halberds or something).
The Tau/Necrons army is 1999 points.

In both cases, I'm trying to get the Allied Detachment to run the spectrum from mobile-harassment (Veil of Darkness blob + Wraiths + Flyers) to in-your-face-threatening (Purifiers + Dreadknight + more), thus allowing the Broadsides to fire freely.

Am I spending too many points in Broadsides? How many Broadsides will efficiently get the job done? The only reason Tau is a Primary Detachment is so that I can have three units of Broadsides, and with the Team Leaders having Target Lock, they can effectively fire at 6 different targets. As an Allied Detachment, the most I can get is three Broadsides in one unit, and only one Team Leader with Target Lock, which would reduce me to 2 shots at one target and 1 shot at a separate target. (Plus with any opponent's dedicated backfield threat removal squads out there, 3 units are harder to deal with than 1.) What is the consensus on Broadside utility?

Edit: Removed Twin-Linked denotation on SMS entries.

I think that it's somewhat an abuse of the rules to spend less points on your 'Primary' Detachment than your Allied Detachment.

Also, your SMS are not Twin Linked.

As for how many broadsides, I generally run 2 units of 2 or 1 unt of 3 at around 1500 in a full on Tau force and find myself out of targets pretty quick. 3x 2 will probably do very well at 2000

I don't get why having more points of allies than prinary is over-powered...everyone has exactly the same points to spend. Furthermore, in every option he gave above...he has two troops and an hq, so if anything its like he has two "primary" forces.

Anyway, I think I prefer one unit for now to preserve the FOC slots. Especially since you can split fire.

I never said it was over powered. Just that it was the abuse of the spirit of the rules to make a Primary Detachment that is smaller than the Allied Detachment.

Or in other words, a Tau army should have more Tau in it than it does Necrons or Space Marines.

Broadsides are amazing at blowing up vehicles but that is about it. So when asking how many is the wright number really depends on how many vehicles you think you are going up against. Also consider what the AV is going to be. When fighting dark eldar for example, missile pods are much better at taking out the transports and you will find your large number of broadsides is wasted points. If you are going up against a bunch of AV 14 vehicles then you will need more broadsides. Typically armies with lots of vehicles have low AV while armies with few vehicles have high AV. As a result you really don't need too many broadsides.

Also, for the necrons, you can only take 15 troops in a night scythe, and I'm pretty sure the unit of wraiths have to have the same weapons

Some Tomb World in some galaxy by that one thing in that one place (or Minnesota for nosy people)

Im pretty sure that the 20 necron warriors will march up with the overlord and start out of the scythe

Yeah, but I still think it has to be the amount that can fit inside of the transport.

Well, from a competitive standpoint the list is pretty neat... Fluff-wise I hate it and I wouldn't like to play against it, but YMMV...

You don't need nearly as many broadsides as in 5th because vehicles can't hide behind the magic damage table like they could. It's hard to say what the right number is at this point. I'm thinking a single group of 3? They can frag a couple of LRs over the course of a game.

Nope, You don't actually have to be able to fit all the troops in to the dedicated transport, they just can't use it till the squad is at or below the transport capacity. SOB has that problem with the only transport they can by being smaller than the squad.
