I'm in the process of painting the bases for a CSM army, my plan is to base a bunch of cultists in a few different landscape types, that way they appear to be assembled from all over the Imperium. I am going to base at least 1 set of cultists (about 10 minis all together) as if they were on Mars. I used Blackfire Earth texture paint to get the rough craggy look, and I'm satisfied with that, at least for now.
The problem is that I haven't been satisfied with the colors I've been able to get thus far in simulating the red dust of the martian surface.
I'm using a relatively basic selection of paints, almost all of them made by citadel. I've tried several blends of Mournfang Brown, Mephiston Red, Averland Sunset, white, black, and even flesh tones. I've tried drybrushing in lighter khaki tones and washes of nuln oil and reikland flesh shade and I haven't been able to get the real deep rust red/ orange that I've wanted.
I just bought Trollslayer orange and Seraphim Sepia shade, but I figured before I dive in with those I would see if anyone here has been successful in getting that Martian effect. Any pointers or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
