how is this number reached?

are the attacks multiplied?

say, i have 2A,

2(bolt pistol+ chainsword)=4A

+ charge= 5A

or 4A+rage = 6A

is this how its done?

i've just never had this described to me in detail. I'm trying to understand the science behind the game now.

2A
You'd need a bolt pistol and chainsword, not Boltgun. This will bring you to 3A
+1 for charging or +2 if you have rage.

So 5A if charging with Rage

First, you take the number of attacks on your profile. Let's use an Assault Marine as an example: they have 1 attack.

If the model has two or more single-handed weapons, you add one (and only one) extra attack. You do not add one attack per weapon, and do not count weapons that are not single-handed weapons (note that Pistols can be used as Melee weapons - RB p52). In our example, an Assault Marine has a bolt pistol and a close combat weapon; these are single-handed weapons, and so add +1 attack to the model's profile. He now has 2 attacks.

If the model charges, he gains another attack, giving 3 attacks for a standard Assault Marine on the charge.

Or, if you're thinking about Death Company (which I assume you are, with the mention of Rage and 2 attacks)), then you have 2 attacks base, +1 if you have a pistol and combat weapon (or power weapon, etc.), and +2 if you charge, giving 5 attacks on the charge.

Have a good read of page 24 of the rulebook for an explanation of all this.

4 attacks on the charge with assault marines. 2 base 2 for the rage rulewhich replaces the +1 charge to +2 for having rage not 5.`The rage rule is specifically replaceing the +1 charge attack with 2.pg 41 under rage..

+2 insted of +1

You forgot the 2 close combat weapons. Other people above were right in their explanation, don't let this guy confuse you.

He also got the base attacks wrong and that assault marines don't have rage.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

Assault marines attacks are 1 as per the profile. It is important to not forget that as there are many abilities that strip bonus attacks off of you.
Also you can arm them with meltaguns and plasmaguns so you should clarify to base 1, +1 for 2 ccw etc etc.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

Assault marines have 1 attack base. Then have +1 for having 2 CCWs. Charging also gives you an additional bonus attack.

So a Charging Assault Marine will have 3 attacks. At any other time he will have 2 attacks.

A model with Rage gets 2 attacks for charging instead of the usual 1.
