A team from West Middlesex University Hospital said violent crime is on the increase - and kitchen knives are used in as many as half of all stabbings.
They argued many assaults are committed impulsively, prompted by alcohol and drugs, and a kitchen knife often makes an all too available weapon.
The research is published in the British Medical Journal.
The researchers said there was no reason for long pointed knives to be publicly available at all.
They consulted 10 top chefs from around the UK, and found such knives have little practical value in the kitchen.
None of the chefs felt such knives were essential, since the point of a short blade was just as useful when a sharp end was needed.
The researchers said a short pointed knife may cause a substantial superficial wound if used in an assault - but is unlikely to penetrate to inner organs.
I have no words... except I would like to ask what it's like to live in a constant state of fear of everything around you that one needs to constantly legislate "safety".

Good news, now you are assured that if you are assaulted in the UK, with a kitchen knife, you will bleed to death rather then suffer damage to your internal organs. Or your attacker will be forced to slit your throat instead of going for a gutslash.
And all the preexisting pointy knives are off the streets now too.

Why the face palm? They've been saying for years that kitchen knives are too big, you just don't need them the size they are often sold. The reason that it's an issue is because they quickly come to hand in domestic violence cases.

Yeah, we should have more guns and weapons in the UK so we can be more safe like the USA, where there is no gun crime and massacres, oh wait, here we don't feel the need to have a small armoury in the house.

The classic argument I've always heard in the states about banning guns has been that it's a slippery slope, because then people will just start stabbing each other with knives, and then once you take those away, braining each other with bricks. The message here in this argument is that the tools aren't necessarily what's causing the bad things. It's people being dicks. I've been hearing this argument since I was little back in the 80s, and my family isn't even full of gun nuts. Hell, neither my immediate family nor I actually own guns, it's just a matter of recognizing the futility of trying to legislate against human nature.
I'm just tickled to death you guys got to step two.

Indeed, people need to realize that if someone want to kill someone else, they will find a way. Guns, Knives, Sticks, Rocks, their bare hands, etc...
the best thing you can do is attempt to make a society that minimizes the chance that someone will commit such a horrible crime. While also ensuring severe punishments are in place for the few nutjobs that actually do commit a horrible crime.
And on the accident side of things, if people are educated about guns it will be almost impossable for accidents to happen. Children are taught not to play with matches because they might get burned. The same thing with a hot stove or fireplace. As a result, the child will not play with those things, except for the occasional outlier.
If 99.999% of people will never commit a homicide with any impliment, there is nothing else to do. Any other attempts to restrict the avaliability of weapons will be utterly pointless, because you can't get rid of weapons.
The good news with guns is that you can match bullets to the actual weapon that fired it. Thats much harder to do with Knives or bludgening weapons. If the perp was smart enough to take the knife with him when he left and got it cleaned up you will be left with an almost impossable case. And even if the weapon is left at the scene, fingerprints aren't a garunteed think to find. they don't get left on many surfaces and often get smudged to be unreadable.
Ballistic testing isn't a sure thing either, but its a far better chance of tracing the shooter then other weapons.

Yes, also remember that if the handle and blade are seperate its not technically a kitchen impliment. So you can put an old blade on a new handle and still call it good.

I think it might have been Stalin. Perhaps in regards to the tolls from five year plan. Can't quite remember.
And not even that I agree with it myself, but there's something about humans that makes them turn off their brains and shrug at the big number, all the while panicking and kneejerking about the little one. Not sure why we can accept hunger and poor healthcare for most, and not occasional nutcases for everyone else.
Perhaps if the national media showed more footage of bloated kids with flies biting their eyeballs... Automatically Appended Next Post: MeanGreenStompa wrote:

Why is intentional death so much worse that death through what is effectively global indifference, such as the starving children?
