I am currently starting an Imperial Guard army. I intent on also creating a space marine army.

A question though, I kind of want to have my own theme for the space marines. Would I have to use the Space Marine Codex or could I use one of the other codexes for example could use the Ultramarines codex for my army?

Codex: Space Marines is Codex Ultramarines. They changed the name after 2nd Edition so that it would be less confusing.

But, to answer the question I think you're trying to ask, you can use any of the current Space Marine codex books, so long as the models represent the troops you're trying to use.

Space Marine armies have the advantage like that, of more or less being able to use any of the books. Though you may have to do some work to make them 100% compatible, or have some extra models to represent stuff from different books.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Umm, just for the record, Codex: Space Marines == Codex: Ultramarines. There is no specific ultramarines codex, it just so happens that ultra's are on the cover of C:SM. But no, you don't have to use Codex: Space Marines if you create your own chapter. You could realistically have a chapter that using the BA, SW, DA, BT, or even GK codex.

Well, how far is your Imperial Guard you are "just starting"?

Starting your second army before you've even done much with your first is a recipe for fast burn-out, even in this day and age of allies.

But as said, any Space Marine Codex will serve you well.

Im a bit of a scatter head like that to be honest I am easily influenced. I chose Imperial guard because I had wathed Starship Troopers and liked the thought of the humans exploring the galxing and going against the odds. I only intended on a small army just to sort of pass the time.

While I was thinking of what to collect I kind of love a few of the space wolves models. So I had it in my head it would an imperial guard army from Fenris and I owul dhave Canis Wolfborn as the ally who would come on as a reserve at some point.

I just recently watched 300 (My favourite film) and well now I want to create spartan space marines.

You see a bit scatter headed! I do plan on doing more to my Guard army as I only have about 600 points if that at the moment.
