Subject: When is it time for a second army?
|
 |
Shunting Grey Knight Interceptor
|
Hello Dakka-ites,
As i finish building my stormraven and crossing the 2500 point line for my Grey Knights army I wonder if it is time to build a new army. When do I have enough points of one army to move on to another? I have been looking at other armies and like both the Eldar and Tau. But I am hesitating to dive into my second army because I do not want to have to buy models for two different armies regularly. So when do I have enough points of one army to begin another?
Thanks, Dan

It's not a matter of crossing a line and being ready, it's more like when you get the itch to start playing something new, or decide to take on a new hobby project. So if you don't feel ready for a new army, you're not, and if you do, you are. Doesn't matter if your current army is sitting at 750 points or 8000.

You don't need permission from the interwebz to start a new army. You might need permission from your mom/gf/wife/significant other but that's a whole separate issue.
As others have said, once youve reached the point of thinking about something else is probably time to pick up a new codex to see if you like it and go from there.

I started a small Black Templars force when my Armored Company was in a slump.
Now, I still have the 2000 points of Black Templars and well over 13,000 points of Armored Company.
The moral of the story is, you don't set aside an army to work on another - do as you wish. Buy a Leman Russ and a Black Templars upgrade sprue in the same trip!
Ally a squadron of armor to the Black Templars to spice up their game!
TLDR: there's no time when one really abandons one's armies for another - just work on what you feel like.

Since myself and both of my roommates play 40K we have a house rule about starting new armies, no more than 2 unpainted armies at a time. How many points the army is doesn't matter as long as you have no more than 2 armies that are unpainted. Part of this was to put a stop to my one particular roommate who has a large IG army, a large Tyranid army and a large DA army, none of which is complete. He doesn't need to start another army, he needs to finish the ones he has. This doesn't stop him from getting more units for an existing army though.
We say unpainted what we really mean is unfinished, even if it is a dead simple paint job, just finish the army.

There are people with several 2000-4000 point armies and people with a single 100000+ point army. It all depends on when you feel like getting another one. I had around 2000 points of marines when I started IG and less than 1000 points of IG when I started DE. It all depends on you.

When that problem you have with rampant bags of extra cash clogging up your house just gets out of control.
|
In Boxing matches, you actually get paid to take a dive and make the other guy look good.
In Warhammer 40K, you're expected to pay cash out of your pocket for the privilege of having Marines and IG trample all over your Xenos/Chaos. |
