Subject: Some help with starter boxes

Devastating Dark Reaper

Hey. I am just starting to get into Infinity and I had a couple questions that maybe you could help me with. I got a big batch of Yu Jing stuff for Christmas and I want to get my two buddies a starter box of their own to kind of coax them into the hobby (read have someone to play with). I will probably be using the Imperial Service Box myself though I do have the generic Yu Jing starter as well. One of the friends is pretty set on Nomads, in particular the Bakunin Jurisdictional Command box. The other is deciding between PanOceania boxes, but I have a feeling he is leaning towards the Acontecimento Shock Army based on looks. If I am doing things right with the army builder, it appears that Nomad box works just fine for either the normal army or the sectorial, but the Yu Jing and PanO sectorial boxes cannot use all the models for a generic PanO force due to AVA requirements. It also seems that the armies are not very even as far as points cost either. Assuming I entered everything correctly what I have is below.

First, are all these three lists correct? The Bahg Mari on the box didn't list a light shotgun as it does in the army builder, but I didn't see another option. Also, I just arbitrarily picked a lieutenant in each list, is it a big deal which model is the lieutenant? Unless I did something wrong, the Yu Jing list is much, much higher as far as total points though it could be pretty easily fixed by pulling out the Hsien leaving them all around 120 points. Are these boxes meant to play against each other as is? It seems they are more even on model count / materials cost than based on points costs. Some of the generic infantry could easily be played as medic/engineer/hacker to inflate the total points I suppose, but I was trying to avoid complicating things early on.
Second, is there anything I should be warned about, or warn my friends about before starting with a sectorial? I understand they give up some flexibility for theme which is part of what makes them interesting to me. I would just like to avoid the problem of having anyone with an uphill battle to start off with. Is there such a thing as a bad matchup between lists in Infinity? Are any of these particular sectorials (Imperial Service, Bakunin, Acontecimento, Holy Orders, Neoterran) particularly difficult to play for beginners or in general?
And finally, I want to grab them each an additional blister to go along with their starter box. As far as I understand you can fairly well play with whatever you want for the most part. I would ask however, are there any stellar additions I might recommend to them to get next, or any real turds that are better to avoid?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, and if anyone is willing to point out the differences in style between the PanO sectorials to help my friend chose which one he would prefer I would greatly appreciate it.

OK, to answer a few of your questions as best i can.... The Starter boxes are mainly to give a flavour for each faction/sectorial, they are not balanced against each other either in terms of models/lists available or points. (i believe the range of the boxes is somewhere between 119 and 220 points looking at all the boxes, BobbaFett has a list of how mayn points are in each of the Starter boxes). They are not 'Starters' in terms of 'buy the box, build, paint, play', they are more of a...well, a starter to give you a range of models for a particular force that you can get for a reasonable price and then expand from there. The Sectorial starter boxes are meant to be used for the Sectorial lists, dont expect to be able to make a generic force with a sectorial starter as they are made in a way that utilises the AVA of the Sectorial (as you have found out), you will need to buy additional models to be able to switch between a Sectorial and a Vanilla (generic) force. In terms of the lists, i cant view them properly (because im at work, nothing youve done ) but i can say that if there is only one Bahg Mari available then you have picked the right one. Often secondary weapons (such as light shotguns, light flamethrowers etc.) arent mentioned on the unit cards, but the Army Builder is correct on the loadouts (mostly, there are a couple of discrepancies but i cant remember them off the top of my head, mostly involve the fact the the Army Builder hasnt been updated with Campaign: Paradiso yet..). theres nothing wrong with starting with a Sectorial AFAIK, the only 'problems' you may find are the (relaticely)complicated rules for Link Teams which arent apparent in the Generic faction armies, as well as there being fewer options for which models to take in a Sectorial force, and occassionally this means you miss out on some equipment/skills completely (i think the ASA misses out on TO for example). But again, you have already noted this with the 'lack of flexibility'.... There is no such thing as a bad matchup in Infinity, all the factions/sectorials are superbly balanced with each other so you dont need to worry about that. As you will no doubt see all over the Official Forums 'It's not your list, it's you!' which basically means that army list building isnt as important in Infinity as it is in other mini wargames (Like 40k/ Warmahordes for example), and there is a much bigger focus on how you use the list youve built (positioning, movement, sneaky tricks etc.). I think thats all the advice i can give at this stage tbh, i know very little about either PanO or YJ so i cant help with lists/blisters etc., but you seem to have a pretty firm grasp of the idea anyway! I would say, let them pick what they want, by all means give them advice if you can, but let them look at the miniatures page(s) and look through the stats/weapons of what they like (should give them a good idea of what all the stats mean as well if you explain as you go) and let them pick something from there... That all said, welcome to Infinity! And good on you for getting your friends involved as well EDIT: Trying to catch as many spelling/grammar mistakes as possible....im having a bad typing day...

Whilst all of the units in a sectorial box can be used in the "regular" army of that faction, you will have problems using all of the MODELS due to AVA changes between sectorials and 'vanilla' faction.
Sectorials swap reduced AVA for some units, with increased AVA for other units and the ability to use link teams.
Welcome to infinity. Hope your stay is a long one.
