Wondering Why the Emperor Left

United Kingdom

I have decided that im going to be starting guard as my second army and need help deciding what type of army I should make.
I'll be aiming for about 1000 points to start with and have around £100 to spend.

Is it better to make a full mech army, a mix, or a full footslogging?

Please help!

In my opinnion a mix would be best. For example foot slogging platoons but veterans with transports (and all the other tanks and stuff). Although I do not use transports myself to be honest because I like my footslogging catachan force.

I shall rule the world someday utilizing my cuteness. And I already have one minion to help me do it!

Of course it makes sense. When there are a bunch of BDSM clowns doing Olympic gymnast routines throughout your unit, while also cutting off heads, you tend to get a bit distracted.

Yeah, I agree with gaovinni. I have had a bit of success with two 30 man blob platoons with commissars, and veterans in chimeras, backed by several tanks.

Mech is the "best" style if you're wanting to go to a lot of tournaments. Foot IG has several weaknesses that tournaments seem to ALWAYS use, making it hard for a true foot guard army to shine (killpoints and time limits being the big ones) if you're playing out of the book though, foot IG can still bring a mean list, as the things that screw us over are rarer (killpoints is a 1 in 6 chance, nightfighting isnt ALWAYS on turn 1, etc)

I've tried hybrid (mix of on foot and mechanized infantry) and had mized results. Sometimes its awesome, and other times it sucks. Usually you want to find something you're doing well, and spam the hell out of it. Got infantry? Drown your opponent in bodies. Like tanks? Take so much armor your opponent forgets what small arms even exist for. etc. etc. Hybrid breaks that rule, since now there's infantry for his templates to kill, transports for his autocannons to kill, and tanks for his melta to kill. You're no longer overwhelming certain parts of his list, and it makes your list much more manageable and easier to defeat.

A couple of other little things. I'm not familiar with how pounds work (filthy american here) but 100 pounds may not be enough to make much of a guard army unless you go third party or used. Wargames factory, warlord games, defiance games UAMC (the other kits will be released when the sun explodes apparently) and tons of other companies all make excellent 3rd party minis for far cheaper than GW. If you go used, swapshop and ebay always have great deals on minis if you're willing to look.

Also, we had a great thread on tips for IG players a while back. I cant find it and link to it on my phone, but I'll be sure to edit in a link later when i can get on my computer in a little while.

I'd go full mech. Foot guard just die far too fast against far too many opponents.

Also, mech vets are popular for a reason - 3 highly mobile special weapons for 155 points (or 170 points) is simply awesome. At moderate points levels you can get 5 or 6 of these, plus back-up.

At 1,000 points the bigger issue is troops vs Support, since at higher levels you can start off with 3 Russes or 3 Vendettas and fill the rest of your list with troops and support.

Interesting thread for me as I am also starting a guard army and have often wondered what a good balance would be. What would be your troops in a 'full mech' army? Just veterans or a small platoon as well?

I'm just a bit concerned that with no cheap bodies the vets as my only scoring unit would just die horribly as their transports explode. But I'm a total IG novice so what do I know?!

If you go mech, go all mech. Any bodies not in a transport will die, instantly.

You shouldn't worry about lack of scoring units. As long as your list includes enough, you'll be fine. Your opponent's firepower will be split between your vets, your tanks, and your other support units. Even if he does concentrate entirely on your troops (and therefore leave himself open to being pounded by everything else), there's usually one or two survivers in each squad who can still score.
