Are you intending for them not to be green?

It looks like grey primer and then green wash slathered all over.

I'd suggest taking your photos further away, against a white backdrop and in natural light (or with flashgun given that its winter). As it is its really hard to get a good guess on colour of the miniatures as the light is distorting it. Some highlighting after the wash to bring out edges might bring a bit more life into the scheme.

Ya,It looks good but your picture quality is not good at all. It's very difficult to tell. Take pictures without flash, make sure your focused on the model and have a backdrop. The painting looks good but it is difficult to tell. One thing I could tell is that the cloak looks really nice. It really looks like fire!

I'll echo the above comments about the photo quality, but that can easily be improved. As to painting, it possible that you need to apply a little less wash, and a stronger shade of green for your main coat. I would also recommend highlighting as currently the depth of colour provided by your wash isn't really standing out against you base coat or it appears to be pooling.

Personally, and this is just my opinion, you may not prefer it, I would switch your paint scheme to something a little stronger in the way of green, your army, to my eyes, is bordering more on a beige colour. On a positive note, your definitely on the right tracks with regards to applying your main colours, leaving the natural crevices a deeper shade - a highlight would serve to deepen those a lot more.

Hope this helps, keep up the good work

If you like the more avocado-ish green, that's up to you, but I had to recheck the title to make sure these were supposed to be Salamanders. Now, to be fair, my pictures looked the same way initially, which was due to my picture quality rather than my painting quality. (I also paint Salamanders.) The only thing that really jumps out at me is that it seems like your paint is applied a little thickly. You might get better results with more numerous, thinner layers. I also noticed the 'I' (or Roman numeral '1') you freehanded on the top figure. I think that it could use a couple more layers. Personally, for my freehanding work I purchased a micro-pen, and have found the quality of my lettering increased by an immense amount.

In any event, hope that helps.

It is meant to look like it is. the picture quality is bad but it looks brighter in real life. I will try for another picture

I would suggest you use thinner paint, and work on your neatness. These are the most important skills for all painters. try adding a little water or medium to your paints.

Are those any good? I was thinking of getting one myself, but i'm not sure of how they work and where to find them.

I got mine in the calligraphy section of Hobby Lobby.

I purchased two of them, one with a finer, lighter tip (the top image) and one with a slightly darker, thicker tip (the bottom image). Neither is a Micro-Pen brand, both are generic alternatives. Unlike paint pens, there isn't any tricks to making them work, they're just very very fine tipped pens. (Kind of like a felt tipped pen.) You just mark with them, and go. It took me a couple of attempts to get it right, since writing that small and cramped doesn't come naturally. The way I do it is to make a very light pencil line in the center of where the word is going to be, then start by doing the first, last, and center letter(s) before filling in the rest. I practiced on a piece of cardboard, and by the time I moved to my models I was able to do it satisfactorily. (The bottom image isn't as good as I'd like, but it's legible, and they've gotten better since I went on.) I've even had people ask where they can get little red tactical squad arrows with Roman numerals on them, although the one here on Anytos isn't my best one.

Hmm, I think i'll invest in some - only problem is that I like to put white writing on my own Salamanders armour - it stands out well against the green. Can you get them in various colours?

Sure can! I lied, btw, the thinner writing is indeed a Micron brand pen. The thicker writing is a Faber Castell brand pen, and both come in varying colors.

Hmm, thanks for the reply Jimsolo! I'll get myself some - may improve my painting.
And apologies to the OP for hijacking his thread for a few comments :(
