So, we all know that the two Axes included in the Sanguinary kits are 'Power Axes' and thus almost unusable. (I know people obsess over the AP2... I just can't see the value in it.)

But, if one were to say... cut off the axehead and leave the wing things (On the one-headed axe, it would be necessary to pivot the axehead 180 degrees so that this would take effect) it would be very easy to make a Power Maul (There's no Axe blade - only some wings to smash peoples skulls with.)

Would this be considered a MC, 2-handed Power maul? Or would I be forced to use them as Axes, as described in the FAQ?

And "Unwieldly" does not mean "almost unusable".

I realise that.

To me, Initiative 1 is not something to be used on a S5 weapon. Maybe I'm stuck in fifth, but if I'm going to be forced to be I1, I want S8 at least.

I said that Power Axes were almost unusable. As in, I don't want to use them unless there is a really, really really contextual reason to use them.

New game time to move on. There is a lot of s6 sergeants out there with powerfists. That's not much better than an axe. Having an axe gives you a cheap option to deal with 2+ saves.

The Axes are awsome. Sanguinary Guard have a 2+ armor, so there is very little that will hit them first and deny their save before they get to swing their axes.

Plus you will have FnP so even if something ignores your armor you will probably have the FnP, unless you are facing a Dreadnought or its a sergeant with a PF. And if a Dreadnought made it into melee with your Sanguinary Guard something went wrong and a PF sergeant will only on average do one wound.

Not sure why you would want a maul. The only time I ever see anyone taking Mauls is on Chaplains because they have no choice.
