Grim Rune Priest in the Eye of the Storm
|
This one of my normal Gunline list I use. Normally I put the Rune Priest and his Long Fang Pack in the center with the other two Long Fang Packs. The Grey Hunter are usually placed into cover. Usually by turn 3 I start moving the Gunline forward to seize any middle ground objectives.

Long Fangs Pack, 165 pts (Heavy Bolter x1; Lascannon x2; Missile Launcher x2) >Pack Leader (Infantry (Character); Assault Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Armour; Bolt Pistol; Close Combat Weapon; Acute Senses; And They Shall Know No Fear; Counter-attack; Fire Control)
Grey Hunters Pack, 225 pts (Wolf Standard; Bolt Pistol x7; Boltgun x6; Close Combat Weapon x8; Plasma gun x2; Plasma Pistol)
1x Grey Hunter w/ Mark of the Wulfen (Bolt Pistol; Boltgun; Close Combat Weapon)
1x Grey Hunter w/ Power Fist (Power Armour; Bolt Pistol; Boltgun; Power Fist)
Grey Hunters Pack, 225 pts (Wolf Standard; Bolt Pistol x7; Boltgun x6; Close Combat Weapon x8; Plasma gun x2; Plasma Pistol)
1x Grey Hunter w/ Mark of the Wulfen (Bolt Pistol; Boltgun; Close Combat Weapon)
1x Grey Hunter w/ Power Fist (Power Armour; Bolt Pistol; Boltgun; Power Fist)
Grey Hunters Pack, 220 pts (Wolf Standard; Bolt Pistol x7; Boltgun x6; Close Combat Weapon x8; Meltagun x2; Plasma Pistol)

1x Grey Hunter w/ Power Fist (Bolt Pistol; Boltgun; Power Fist)
Grey Hunters Pack, 220 pts (Wolf Standard; Bolt Pistol x7; Boltgun x6; Close Combat Weapon x8; Meltagun x2; Plasma Pistol)

This list seems very weak against fliers I would suggest cutting back 2 of the melta grey hunter squads in order to buy an aegis line with quad gun and another squad of long fangs so that you can have some better long range shooting to deal with the armies that could easily maneuver around you. Also you can't rely on there being good cover you could easily end up with a map with lots of forests and area terrain but that's no defense against some of the heavier guns like battle cannons. Also consider some lascannons in long fang squads for punching heavy armor as well as insta killing heavy infantry such as paladins.

Doubt is the open gate through which slips the most fatal of enemies. |

You are the fist person to ever suggest reducing Melta instead of telling me to get rid of the Plasma.
I do sometime use a ADL sometimes and with the local Meta flyers are an issue, I am the only one with one. I find the 2 Las-Cannons in the 1st Pack is usually sufficient for the job. I have had issues with the Ork tucks with the big canon, but most of them are all dead by turn 3.
I have not gotten into real heavy terrain with this type of list often.
I would call this my Core, I usually star with this and trade off for other things.
Lone Wolves: Most of my trade off from this list is the Plasma Cannon Long Fangs for a pair of Lone Wolves [Close Combat Weapon, Storm Shield, MotW and two Wolves].
Bloodclaws: Dumping the Flamer Grey Hunters for a Wolf Priest an full Back of Blood Claws.
Wolf Scouts: I also sometimes Drop a Grey Hunter Pack for some one of the Grey Hunters.

Surely an ADL would only be a good thing? Put it with a LF squad and the wolf leader can shoot the quad gun.
The quad gun's also decent anti-light armour and medium infantry.

Can I ask what the strategy is behind the Long Fang pack with the HB, 2x LC and 2x ML? Isn't it better to have a dedicated weapon for the whole pack like all ML with maybe a LC or PC?

This list doesnt need anti-air that bad. It's got enough Hunters to ignore them and just take the objectives. Only if it's a Necron Flying Circus or something similar, would I start shooting the air with the Long Fangs. If you put some Fangs and the Rune Prist with Divination, they are great anti-air. Go all ML's, toss a cyclone ML wolf guard squad leader. The Rune priest cast his primaris power giving them all re-rolls to hit and they are nasty. The priest mans the Quad Gun. That's a lot of twin linked high strength shooting You can usually get the 6's needed to drop a flyer a turn with this loadout. Regardless, like I dais, if you play smart (only letting each flyers shoot twice usually) you can just ignore them in the shooting phase. Automatically Appended Next Post: Just remember, although flyers can be tough to deal with, 60+ power armored units is hard for most flyer heavy armies to deal with. So, neither armies are that great at killing one another quicky. You have a major advantage of having TONS of points in scoring, sturdy units that can take pretty much anything they have left on the ground.

I will start with their history. When I got around to rebuilding my Long Fangs [they had been cannibalized by my other marine armies] I dove into my bits box and came up with 7 Missile Launchers [Two were Scout Missile Launchers], 5 Plasma Cannons, 2 Las Cannons and a Scout Heavy Bolter. So I built one with the 5 Missile Launchers, one with the 5 Plasma Cannons and the last one got the leftovers.
Then come the 1st game vs. Nids, I was thinking that the others would be the star players and the mixed unit would just be a minor support unit. This changed once the game started, I found myself using the split fire on that unit the whole game dealing with multiple threats like Spore Mines and Guants. Well this kept happening, the Wile the 4 Anti-Tank units would work on different things that little Heavy Bolter just kept finding targets and don’t recall a single turn that it did not something it could be used for.
Then along came my 1st game in 6th edition: At this point this mixed Pack had been my go to Pack. I was facing a Mechanized Marine force. With my Rune Priest Prescience this pack took out 1 Land Speeder, 1 Razorback, 2 Dreadnaughts and a numerous Marine Squads.
So basically what the Tactics behind it are the Rune Priest Starts each turn making the Pack Twin-Linked and then target priority become, the Heavy Bolter and Possibly the two Missile Launchers find a soft to medium target and then the two Las-Cannons and Possibly the two Missile Launchers would find a Hard Target.

An ADL would be VERY good in this list. Besides giving cover to the gunline it would also plug some gaps against flyers

I probably will add a ADL once my local Meta gets some flyers.
The only mission I have problems with is with is “The Scourging”., but with 91 Space Wolves on the Field it usually is not an issue. The best mission ends up being “Big Guns Never Tire, then everything on the board is scoring

Even without flyers, an ADL with a quad-gun is a good option.
It provides a protective bonus for your troops as well as four extra S7 shots.
Sure, an autocannon isn't as good as a lascannon, but it will still do its fair share of damage. It is also a lot harder to kill an organic quad gun - its T7 with 2 wounds. Most people ignore it, meaning it gets fire every turn.
