How does one go about actually getting models for a bt close combat army? Im not spending $33 to upgrade 5 regular marines with the gw upgrade sprue. Does anyone have a favorite source for cc weapons and other bt related bits? Also can anyone explain why they chose bt and some strategies they like? Im trying to pick a chapter and im leaning toward bt. Thanks guys.

After reading the codex i think im just gonna paint my marines in bt colors and run nilla.

First, this is more of a M&P thread topic, second good choice going vanilla as the BT codex is so outdated, they have little to none good lists that you could run.

have either of you ever played against Black Templars? their terminators are pretty mean, especially with two heavy weapons available. and don't forget blessed hull and PoTMS available on predators and vindicators...

From a hobby aspect ebay is your friend when it comes to BT bits and stuff. You can also buy assault marines to get your hands on chainswords.
FW has absolutely sick looking termie upgrades (shoulder pads and SS), and a really nice venerable dread. They also a carry a large transfer sheet with a lot of BT icons on it.

As far as list-building BTs: it's tough. But I still love it. Some highlights:
HQs: you can really load them up with goodies
Elites: really good termies (tank hunter, with dual heavy weapon in a 5-man squad), and good assault-termies
Troops: ability to stick 2 special weapons in 5-man squads, you can also create 20-man blobs
Fast-Attack: not much there...
Heavy-Support: POTMS on vindicators
Just about any squad can take a LRC as a dedicated transport.

There are rumours of a new dex, but not expected until much later in the year...

Hope this helps.

BT fluff would have you believe that they are a close-combat army. Sadly this is no longer true on the actual tabletop in competitive play.

My main force is BT, and i'll be the first to tell you that the people claiming the army is useless couldn't be further from the truth. That said, they are indeed outdated and in need of a revamp. Sadly the good old days of entire close-combat orientated lists are dead and burried, so if you're actually looking to compete in tournament play with a CC army, this isn't the one for you. That's not to say you can't put one together and use it for funzies, i've had some great success in friendly games using CC Termies and LRC transports, but it won't win me many high-end games.

BT strength right now lies firmly within the shooting options. I run a list at 2k points containing 25 Terminators in MSU. Each squad of 5 has either 2 Assault Cannons or 2 Cyclone Missile Launchers in it. It's absolutely brutal.

Bitzwise, sadly I have to say I did indeed buy 2 boxes of BT upgrade kits from Games Workshop. I wish I hadn't. However, when it came to sourcing all of my parts (like the Cyclones and the Assault Cannons) I used eBay. I also chose to use the armpads and Stormshields from Forge World, since they're just beautifully designed. I also used a site called Bitzbox, but I believe it's a UK based company. There are bound to be equivalents in the USA though.

E-bay works fine for extra CC bits, but I use upgrade boxes. They have everything your need, and then some! Yes, a little on the expensive side... So if your just looking to chain swoard, and bolt pistols, e-bay is your best bet. Some people on there part out the "chapter upgrade box" and you can get all the parts you need.

Agreed about the SS from Forgeworld. That is a true 3++ shield. The ones you get in a terminator box, i use for marines in power armor. lol.

I have to stand by my belief they're not worth it with the current Codex. Assault lists can be done for fun but they frankly they're not competitive, and the shooting archetype lists are tragic with the new changes to RZ, and are about as fluffy as a skinned cat. Vanilla is better by a large margin but still far below the line that most Codex's balance on, because half of that Codex is filled with cool units that are sadly redundant and overpriced.

If you're determined to get Templars then your best bet is finding a web store that gives you 20% discounts for large amounts of kitbashed Marines.
