I'm looking to add a 5 man sternguard in a drop pod to my 1250 list. That is to say I am building a 1250 list and would like to add a 5 man squad, and am looking to compliment the ironclad that is also in a drop pod.

I figure while I have a couple of threats in their front line, they will be too busy dealing with a dread and some supermen while everyone else comes crawling up their lines.

At higher points I can up the number of guard, but at 1250, I think 5 men is the limit I can put towards them.

How would you handle this?

Combi-meltas. They drop in, and frag a vehicle or 2+ armor save unit of your choice.

Well, this will definitely be a suicide unit. So make sure that the squad can hit hard. As said, combi-meltas are a good choice. But the 6th edition is not fully mech and so combi-plasmas could also be an option, vs. TEQ and MCs.

A mix of combi-melta and combi-plasma would be good.

Don't forget to give the Serg a PF.

And, maybe make one of those combis as a -flamer?
For overwatch and to get at the support crews hiding behind whatever you're melting.

I'd make them all combi melta, wouldn't worry about the PF. This is a shooting squad, you almost expect to loose them after they get done blasting whatever you drop them on. Always a good purchase.

On building Tyranid army flow chart.

The problem with a PF is that your sarge will just get killed in a challenge before he can swing with it. If you want to give your sarge a CC weapon, go with a lightning claw.

But, these are vets, with A2....
Hope that at least some survive, and they've already lost their combi-weapon by then.
So, charge them in, and use their stats to full use.

Once all that juicy special ammo has been thrown around a bit

Just because they have two attacks doesn't mean they should be in CC. The reason you give it a CC weapon is for when the enemy charges you. Your sternguard should be shooting with special issue amo until they get killed.

I play Salamanders, so I run combi-meltas by default. If I am going into a tourney, I sometimes add in a flamer or combi-flamer for every five of them.

I run Combi-Plasmas and x2 Plasma Guns
I know I loose the Special Ammo with them, but I will still have Plasma Shots each turn after I expend the Combies.
As for the Sarge, I am looking at replacing the Power Fist with a Lighting Claw [Fluffy] or Power Maul [for the smaking around ability, if I do the Power Maul I might go with a Plasma Pistol.
