Ok so im looking and converting vulken from salamanders to look more LotD. my plan is pretty simple but im not to sure how to go about it.

First off i wanted to turn his spear to be going up and down, not really a problem just hack off his hand and the end of the spear, turn 90 degrees and BAM maybe a little green stuff.

second i want to turn his spear into a scythe, again im thinking green stuff for this to make a scythe blade, have never made something like that ever so some tips would be super.

third, i want to put a hooded helmet on him, like the one on the end of the second row of this, http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1400016&prodId=prod900140a

Last but not least, this is the part i need advice on, how do i go about removing all of the salamander insignias?

if any one can give me some tips that would just be super, really need to make my HQ so haha.

I would suggest a piece of plastic card for the scythe blade, cut it out then shave flakes off till you get an edge.

That helemt you might be able to nab off ebay "dark angels helmets" or something.

As for the rest I can't offer any helpfull advice sorry.

I would suggest starting with the generic Space Marine Captain as your baseline. Some GS scales on the cloak can be as simple as little dots or a more detailed pattern (depending on your level of GS-fu...mine is weak).
For his Flamer Gauntlet I used a PF with a chopped up bit from an IG smoke launcher. For his "spear" I went with a WFB based sword as a Relic Blade equivalent. No reason why you cant just use a halberd from any model line.
Paint to match your Chapter colors and your good to go.
I went with the Captain model because the regular plastic is much easier to work with than F-cast or metal (IMHO).
Front:

Side. Flamer Gauntlet.

Back. Simple scales on the cloak. On the backpack I cut off the little globes and added dragon heads from the Chaos vehicle weapons.

Top. The sword is just fancy enough, but you could also add a bit of plastic rod on the backend to make it an actual spear.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

My suggestion is to "tru-scale" him. Not REALY, but put a sliver of plasticard under his feet to give him an extra mm of height, put another mm of plasticard or GS in his waist. Then, depending on how much of a gambler you are, you can toss in another mm of material in the neck joint. It gives the model a little bit of extra presence. Also play with the backack. I'd add another mm of plasticard to distance the backpack from the armor, that way you can play with the pose without being limited by the placement of the exhaust vents. Then, if at all possible, play with the backpacks design, If you have enough skull bits, replace the exhaust vents with skulls.

For the paudrons, what I've done in the past is start with the basic line marines and file down the rim. It gives you a lot of space to do custom paintwork.

If you are going to use plasticard for making the scythe, then I warn you now so you do it properly. All plasticard work thats an attachmentm and ends up being fiddly, WILL NEED TO GET PINNED. I'm speaking from experience, because I've had to glue and reglue much of my custom work because the fiddly plasticard bit did not want to stick. Pin it, and it's pretty darn near permanent.

You nay also want to considder looking into the black templar sets. The chained-on-weapons do have a bit of a hardcore look to them, and you might find the robes of interest to your project. Not as excessive as the dark angels robesm and would still work with a hood.

I have never worked with platicard so its all new to me, but does it even have issues with super glue?

But again does any one have any suggestions on how to remove the salamanders insignias? either file it or maybe green stuff over it to fill in the gaps and make it smooth, glue a skull over it haha

It the model is finecast you should be able to cut the Salamander insignia right off with an xacto blade and clean up with a file. It shouldn't take that much time. As far as the Scythe Blade is concerned, I would just cut off the spear head entirely and pivot the hand 90 degrees, then attach the new scythe blade to the other end. Rather than cutting the back pack, I would just replace it entirely with a standard backpack or even the LotD sergeant's backpack.
