Me and a few friends have been thinking about getting into FOW. How expensive is it compared to say Warhammer?

It just depends on the force that your buying. My paratrooper army wasn't that bad, but Fearless Veterans are expensive point wise, so you don't need to buy as much.
A Russian infantry force could break the bank.
I'd say the prices are cheaper but comparable to GW. Various armies are going to run higher then some others, but your still going to spend a couple hundreds dollars to get an army running, minimum.

The wise shopper buys from PSC and Zvesda who sell for approximately £3 per tank. Expensive it not a word I would use.
It really depends on the army but I think you could build several types of armies at around 1500 points for about £100 or so.
What kind of army appeals to you?

I've spent about $175 on my 1750+ US Paratrooper army. Bought and split 2 open fire sets and some other stuff to fill out my army. Buy as much from PSC and other non Battlefront companies.

Even when comparing apples to apples BF is cheaper than GW. A horde FoW army will come out cheaper than a horde WHFB/40K force for instance.

I made a 2000 point tank army (with 19 tanks, 2 armoured cars an infantry platoon and 3 Stukas) for £56, everything but the armoured cars were bought new and 6 of those tanks are metal.
If you buy from battlefront at full RRP the average FoW army is a bit cheaper than the average 40K army but not by all that much. However there are a wide range of historical manufacturers that will allow you to drastically reduce the cost.

As others said its not really hard to build a starter army for ~100 Euros. So for 150-200$ you should be able to build the army of your choice or make some compromises to take the cheap route and come out at around 100$.
If you want a russian horde army - plastic soldier company have a army deal on their site which is dirt cheap (like 100$) and you get lots and lots of infantry. The website is down at the moment but should get back up soon. www.theplasticsoldiercompany.co.uk

I'm interested to know what company you used. I'm been looking to get into FoW since I stopped playing 40k last year but the price of tanks in particular has been kind of put off. Since I'm a big armor fan, and that price is definitely affordable you have me intrigued.

Heck if you really wanted to, I would think 2 boxes of Tigers from PSC can be an army. Not a really functional army, but an army nevertheless!

And if you are really lazy to assemble and paint PSC Tigers then this is another alternative
A box of five costs 20 bucks on e-bay and with some washes, drybrush and weathering they can come out as decent cheap Tigers.

Without a doubt it's much, much cheaper.
The primary reason for this is that the Intellectual Property of WWII cannot be claimed by a Company, so there is alot of competition.
I have found it's at least 30-40% cheaper than WH or WH40k. Just don't buy everything from Battlefront, and keep in mind the most expensive part is the books, picking up cheap models on Ebay etc is easy.
George Spiggott made this list of stuff, please use it as it will save you time and money.

I used Zvezda as it was an early war panzer army (lots of Pz IIs). For late war Plastic Soldier company would be my first recommendation, for tanks at least.
I did make up the army when Zvezda first started releasing their Barbarossa range so it will probably cost a bit more now, maybe £70 or so.

To be honest a drugs habbit it cheap compared with GW these days!
As other have said it all depends on what sort of army/theater you wish to go for, but the likes of PSC and Zvezda have really lowered the cost. Even a Russian Horde army is affordable from PSC/Zvezda, though only for early/mid war atm, some of the late war tanks are still only available through Battlefront.
But even a BF only army needn’t break the bank.

On other thing is that you don't actually need to buy the books for most forces. The main rulebook has the special rules for the major nations and you can get all the current army lists from here http://easyarmy.com/. Its legitimate, endorsed by Battlefront and will cost you a whole 1$ to get access to the lists in a specific book, it also has a lot of free lists.

Or just borrow a friends book until you have the money.
Also you guy are failing to mention Old glory for cheap Infantry and VEhicles. You cannot go wrong with 50 Infantry for 12 bucks.

Brit artillery like Sextons or the 5.5" guns are a complete rip off, but virtually everything else is either fair, or plain cheap.
As for Germans and Ruskies, PSC (if they still exist, their site has been down for weeks) sell those for peanuts.
21 T-34's from PSC will cost £56, from BF over £140
130 Germans + 15 Half Tracks from PSC £56, from BF I dare not hazard a guess lol. £112+ for the Half tracks alone I think.
Rocket Artillery can be costly at about £70 for 8 guns.
But infantry is cheap from BF or PSC. PSC did list a lot of up and comming stuff that will also help you save a fortune, in my opinion their quality is equal, their infantry may be better, lot of poorly cast stuff in BF range.

I love the PSC panthers (despite all the wrong marks and names on the assembly instructions being a bit crap).
Also fill the tanks with spackle/ ballast to make them a bit heavier (I also magnetise my tanks for the turrents).
To this... (In about 5 days)
For the price Plastic Soldier cannot be beaten.

As posted elsewear, Plastic Soldier Company is still in business and is having problems with their Webhost.
You can buy their stuff from the War Store (US) and other stores rather than directly from PSC. Heck, I bet you could still buy directly from PSC if you can find their phone number.
I have the "Point of Contact" Tigers, and I'm very happy with them. I have the German half of an Open Fire, and I'm happy there too. The Stuarts from Auctung! are.... well, a pain. I'm definately looking at picking up some tanks and infantry weapon teams from PSC in the future.

I've noticed that If you go all armour, or all infantry, costs are not too bad at all even if you go for BF models.
It's mech lists which require infantry and vehicles which seem to cost a lot

This was great advice from you a year or two ago. Folks, you can't go wrong if you listen to this person.
To the other poster, yeah, can't wait for plastic king tigers. I may be wrong, but a large number of king tigers were used to defend Vienna in 1945 so there is historical justification for stuffing an army full of them

Russian and Germans are the infantry packs out, though American infantry is PSC's next big release and is expected any time now along with M3/M5 half tracks. Heavy Weapons will apparently follow soon afterwards.
British Infantry is in the pipeline, though there is no solid ETA as of yet.
