Virulent Space Marine dedicated to Nurgle

edit: Decided I will lump in my other projects and even some commissions I am lucky enough to be doing... so standby for those pics too.
A brief history: I have collected GW minis for 2 decades, but my first tournament was in 2000 and I played the Word Bearers. I had never painted an entire army before and wanted it to be fully painted so the night before I still had half the army soaked in GW chestnut ink (loved that ink, wish I could still get it) and the next day some of them had dried to the foam in my carrying case :-/. I have never really settled on an army since then and I am now going to refurbish my old minis and make a massive Word Bearers list (I'm talking about 10,000 poins at least). They were my first tourney list and my first fully painted army, so I feel like I need to return to my roots and stick with them.
The fact that there is now a ton of fluff for the Word Bearers is awesome and feeds my nerdiness even more.
I have come up with a Sorcerer Lord to be a Dark Apostle or Acolyte and lead the army (named Khthoth Mhorgh) but haven't worked out much else and would like some input/help with ideas.
The Word Bearers had a lot of names for different chapters in the army: Serrated Sun, Quillborn, Crimson Mask, Opening Eye, Coiled Lash, Cresent Moon, Burning Hand, Osseous Throne, Chapter of the Void, and Ebony Serpent, etc etc. Does anyone think it would cause to much confusion to make up my own chapter name for them and even tweak the Logo some or have multiple chapters represented by squads with different shoulderpad icons etc.? I was thinking of using the standard Word Bearers' Shoulderpad for most of the army, but then have a multitude of other shoulder Icons to show the marines chaotic and individual nature. I could use some help coming up with a cool chapter name and/or shoulder icon or 2 or 10.
I am thinking of also including units of Thousand Sons, Plague Marines, Khorne Beserkers and Noise Marines and painting them primarily red with a few areas of color and/or icons and detals to chow that the are cult marines, but have defected to the Word Bearers. So, I could use help with any ideas to make Thousand Sons and Noise Marined fit into the red armor of Word Bearers but still be obviously cult marines.
Sorry about the bunch of text here, but just wanted to get my basic ideas out there and hopefully get some hints/tips from others.
Pics will be otw soon, I have some marines nearing completion and just have to get my camera working. I don't want to post horrible cameraphone pics.
Any ideas, hints. tips etc for fluff, painting techniques, army composition or whatever are welcome on my blog as long as it is Word Bearers!!!!
I could really use ideas on good painting techniques for the army and/or some pics of others' attempts.
Here is an old pic of some Traitor guard that I will redo in reds and make into cultists for the army:

I love the cultists you have for your army, they look great. Very reminiscent of the older Mutants from GW's Lost and the Damned list. If you need any ideas on what to get to make some more mutated cultists, then check out my Gallery. I have the original article detailing how Gw made their mutants for the Black Crusade campaign.
For the Thousand Sons and Noise marines; the Thousand sons could go the Black Legion route and replace the colour of shoulder pads with Red, and put the Word Bearers symbol on their loincloths. The Noise Marines could do a red colour very well, just make sure it is annoyingly bright compared to the rest of the army.
I hope this helps

I got a temporay camera to put up some pics. The pics aren't great, but all are WIP anyway:
and my bases wip. Going for a swamp/algae covered look of borken temple flooring and whatnot. The greeenish tone should contrast with the red minis and not look too "christmasy" and I will be updating the bases that are on the minis in the pics. The gray and red temple floors just blended into the mini color scheme and I decided I don't like that.

You can see on some of the marines that I'm toying with white flames on the shoulderpads.
I think I need to redo the {impurity seals} as the ones I made are too rigid and have no leather or cloth looking attributes.
Does anyone have a good tutorial on making autoguns/pistols? I want to convert the lasguns to the autoguns look.
@Brotheralexos: thanks for reply. I also have the old article in the Eye of terror codex they put out. They made great mutants then and they also make good cultists now. I love the DV cultist models. I think the noise marines with have some of the red highlited to a pink edging to make them stand out some.

Guess all the Word Bearers Armies out there are flooding the forums. Here are some more itmes for the army. Most are WIP but some are just one detail or so away from being completed:

Hey, I just wanted to say that I think your army looks great, what really blew me away was how you prepped all of your bases first! I am too lazy to do that. I'm a Black Legion guy, but I am looking forward to following your plog.
I'm pretty sure that fluffwise, you can use which ever unit names you want (from your first post). Frankly I think naming each squad is a great idea. Also as the faithful legion (to Chaos anyway) including all 4 god-troops in a Word Bearers army is a great idea. If you are not planning on using the actual models (for T-sons for example), doing a split color or quartered model would make it suitably clear for your opponents IMHO. Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply! BoM. I was starting to think my posts were invisible :-/
Here are a few more that are getting colse to the final stages.
A Forgefiend. Almost done but I need to finalize the plasma/ energy colours and tone them down some, then weathering and basing.
A Helbrute that needs highlighting and needs to be neatened up a bit.

Very nice works here, I salute your endeavour!
Mass producing anything can be rather tough - I tried to do it with 30 Marines in one go and am still haunted from the trauma haha! So I say kudos to you!
Looking forward to seeing more - I really like the bright colours on these guys as it's very refreshing.

Hey Nem, it's funny (to me) to see this thread. Just last week I went on a Google Crusade looking for your Nurgle stuff. I still ended up finding the best stuff here on Dakka If you can remember, you did some in depth looks at your basing on some site (I couldn't find or remember). I'm looking for some inspiration for muddy, swampy bases.
While I'd personally love to see more Nurgle stuff from you, I think the Word Bearers are a fun army to go with (I was tempted myself). I'm sub'd, and looking forward to seeing where you go with this.
I think mixing Cult Troops into Word Bearers fits in nicely, as they are devoted to the Dark Gods as a pantheon there are bound to be some favoritism. I'm sure you'll make it apparent with conversions as well as paint. One thing you could do is perhaps have some of their original armor color showing through. For example, have the all blue Tzeentch devotee, but use your airbrush (you are using one, it seems ) to give it a couple overhead shots of red. That could symbolize the change to becoming a Word Bearer.

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness. ADB |

Thanks for the posts!
@Jihad_Ragsta: Yeah mass production can swallow your soul. So I just do what I can manage in large chunks and then I make the # of items I am working on smaller and smaller with each step I go.
So if I basecoat 60 marines red and undershade them with an airbrush, I then pull out 10 and do the silver trim etc. Then 5 get to all the other colors before going back to other 5 and catch up etc.
But I am bouncing back and forth so much between models and ideas, it can get confusing.
@Dez: Hey! I did those original swampy bases years ago for my Nurgle and Nurgle Traitors. I used to cut out random shapes from the base and then fill it in with some greenstuff etc, so I could use water effects. Now you can just buy sunken bases from the start and that is awesome!
I am currently changing the way I am doing the swamps for this army, as you can see I have lotsa ruins on my bases and I mixed up some custom washes from ink and matte medium/distilled water. I randomly splash the greens and browns on the bases. I will come in later with some verdigris items and skulls on bases, just before I add some flock and weeds etc.
Oh! and here is another pic:
This defiler needs alot of touch ups to make all the eyeballs look better.

@Know No Pear: Than ks. The bulbous ojects are actually eyes. lotsa different color eyes and looking in all directions. I need to go back in and do highlights and the fine details to be done with the Defilers.
Here is another:
and one just basecoated:
And some Oblits:
Basically the painted minis I'm showing are the basecoated/washed versions that I make real fast to get it table top ready for the last tourney. Then I need to go back in and add more details and highlights etc. So some minis may look "done" but they are not. I have minis at all levels of the process, from "on the Sprue" to all but a % point or 2 from done. So my project looks like a big mess here

Thanks BoM . The face is actually from a coffee table decoration that I saw at a friend's house. I borrowed it for a day and made a mold of it
Decided to open up my blog to all my projects instead of just the WordBearers. I have way to many projects going on at once .... one of the few benefits of losing your job/career :-(
Here are some Malifaux figs I am working on: I love Malifaux btw, just a great game.
Doc McMourning crew with zombie dogs!
2 Confrontation minis (one broken) that were given to me to paint on commission (lucky me )
Thats it for now. Hopefully my next post will show some progress on a previously pictured mini and/or topic.
All critiques are welcome!! I can always use hints/tips and ideas from You Dakka-ites! You guys are some of the best around, so please help out.

Here are some of the Plaguemarines I have started. I posted in another topic awhile back and needed advice on how to do "red" nurgle guys.
These have the colors blocked out and have a wash of black and then some dabs of "verdigris" using Vallejo color named "periscope" I need to do some touch-ups and detail work/highlighting (esp. the skin) and then maybe add some more weathering/dirt etc.
Hopefully these will be obviously linked to the Word Bearers and still be obviously "Nurgle-esque"
I know in the fluff, most Word Bearers look down on dedicating to one God or another, when the can gain powers and pacts through the whole Pantheon of Warp Entities, but I figure even with that overall belief, some Word Bearers would decide to favor one god over the others and therefore become Plaguemarines or beserkers etc etc....
I also think some warbands would run into large Word Bearers armies and decide to declare allegiance to them instead of being stamped out. So I think an Old Thousand Sons Sorcerer and his retinue of Rubric marines might also join with the Word Bearers for the power and prestige that could be gained from that allegiance.
Many of the old Legions have shattered into tiny warbands and even just sole Chaos Marines that run around and harass the imperium, but the Word Bearers were the largest pre-heresy chapter of marines next to the Ultramarines, and still have some of the largest warbands and cohorts running around the Eye of Terror etc. So, I figure many small groups would be quick to join up with the Word Bearers if given the chance.

I'm starting to flip flop on this mega Word Bearer project.
Looking at the red plague marines and othe Nurgle stuff in my bitz box, I'm thinking about revisting Granpa Nurgle
along with these guys:
Anyone have any suggestions on which to follow? I have plenty of Nurgle Marines and Nurglings (about 300 of the really old metal oop nurglings), So much Nurgle stuff that I think even most of my Word Bearers would have Nurgle icons etc, esp. the vehicles.
I hate getting indecisive, but I'm really starting to look at my airbrush and all my Vallejo Air Nurgle colors. :-/

Is there a reason you can't work on both? I rarely work on only one army at a time, but I am bad like that. Hope you keep painting whatever your decision, you really take the time to chaos up your models which makes it fun to see.

I agree with Bastion. I think your WB's are pretty awesome and you're kind of elbow deep in that army as is, but there is no reason you can't have a WB's army with a Nurgle detachment.

I think I may start a Nurgle detachment (as you guys suggest) with the more traditional color scheme (greenish) and that way I may be able to work on 2 armies. I usually have a hard time painting 2 types of same army at the same time though.
I won't be painting over my WB, except 2 of the defilers that I really think are very nurgle with the conversions. That way I will still have a table top ready WB army while building a gazillion million points of Plague Marines.
I can avoid fielding any Nurgle until I'm happy with the finished product. Right now My WB are just barely tabletopn quality and I hate bringing them out and seeing all the little details I need to finish. That may be why I'm drifting away from them to begin with.
Word Bearers are my first army for 40k. An all Tzeentch list was my first WFB army. But I still have a huge desire to make a happy lil Granpa Nurgle Army like my old traitor-guard. The Nurgle sentinels that I made a few years ago are still some of my favorites.
I'm going to go ahead and pick up a Forgeworld GUO, Nurgle Daemon Prince and herald (love that model) and some Plague Toads for spawn. I may get a Khorne Blood Slaughterer and Nurgle it up too because Ilike the "bug" look to it and it may fit in with some Blight Drones if I decide to get them later.
I do need to decide on the Nurgle color scheme though..... :( I may keep to a more old-school greenish color qith silver trim that is rusted orange. I noticed a lot of people are doing the 30k colors these days, but that color scheme has not grown on me yet.
