More specifically I'm looking at Grey Hunters, Wolf Guard and Thunderwolf Cavalry and what to equip them with. Generally I tend to run my GH squads with a WG acting as a sergeant type with the extra attack and higher leadership.

What about other weapons like Chainfists or Powerfists?

If I run three TWC should I give one a power weapon and another a weapon like a fist or a thunder hammer?

I don't have a particular strategy in mind I just want something that would be really effective.

I really hope someone can help me out!

I recommend mixing things up where possible. Include some AP 2 and some AP 3 in each squad whenever possible.

I'd avoid the frost weapons as they cost the same as a powerfist and the powerfist is better than the axe and a cheaper wolf claw is better than the sword.

Also, dirty trick here, a model with a wolf claw and a powerfist gets the bonus attack as both are specialist weapons.

Tau and Space Wolves since 5th Edition.

My GH packs now run with a power axe. It is a hidden ap2 goodness that can only be picked out by precision hits and he still gets the bonus attack for two ccw.

I hardly ever use WG pack leaders at all. However, wolf claw/powerfist combo is pretty nice while giving you flexibility for troop killing and challenges. Extra attack for two specialist weapons as well.

For TWC, it really depends on what you want them to do. If you plan on flanking infantry, toss a storm shield on one, a power sword, and then a couple just naked as their attacks will be rending at strength 5. If going vehicle/MC/Character hunting, toss a thunderhammer on instead of the power weapon and load everyone else up with melta bombs.

Wow. Yuck.

Grey Hunters - No Power Weapon. Mark of the Wulfen.
Wolf Guard Terminators - Depends on role. Wolf Claw or Power Axe is a solid Choice.
Wolf Guard Pack Leaders - Power Axe or Power Fist.

Thunder Wolf Cav - Power Fist
You can only take one Power Weapon per TWC squad, btw. That's a common misconception.

I think GH should go Power Maul as it has a wider effective target range (everything not MEQ) than swords.

Wolf Guard should go Mauls, but Terminators should go Mauls or Axes.

Thunderwolves should go anything. They're good enough to function with anything.

I would say always take a Frost version in the relevent cases of sword/axe. The option is there, why not use it? And its bonus strength too. Always good.

So it seems like Axes are the way to go for squads that are going up against troop heavy armies and Power Fists for Anti-MEQ and armour. Is that right so far?

I quite like the Fist/Claw combo so I think I may have to try that out sometime.

Now for a follow up, since it seems like axes and fists are the go to choices would it be better to put them on Grey Hunters or Wolf Guard since I usually have a WG leading a pack of my GH?

Here's the issue if your WG has a power axe or fist and he's in a challenge against a guy with a power sword there's a good chance he'll never get to swing it.

Of course if the WG is in terminator armour its not a big issue but in power armour i'd go sword.

As for TWC thunder hammer every time, there's very few things a STR10 hit wont slaughter, and you can kill even the heaviest armour.

Pretty much agree here. Grey Hunters should almost never take a power weapon/fist (unless you're trying to turn the unit into a combat-build squad with some additional ICs). Mark of the Wulfen is far more cost-efficient than either. Terminators should take Axes, Claws or possibly Mauls as well. I prefer my Pack Leaders with Axes or Fists (I've been experimenting with Mauls or no power weapon at all as well). TWC should use their one special weapon on a Fist, S10's epic.

Not necessarily. Assuming you're facing a WS4 S4 enemy, each attack they have has only has a 1/4 chance of wounding the Wolf Guard. In return, the Wolf Guard has a 1/3 chance of wounding with each attack, ignores 2+ armour and is more likely to damage vehicles.

So if I run three TWC I'm thinking one with Thunder Hammer, one with a Storm Shield and one without any special weapons. And for Terminators I'm thinking Axe or Fist for a pack leader and in a pack of WG TDA I was thinking of doing one with a fist/claw combo, one with either an AC or CML and the rest with combis or something?

Does that sound like a good idea? Would I be better with a large pack of about eight terminators or something like two packs of four? I only own two boxes of Termis and I want to make one into a RP and another into a Lone Wolf or something.

Fist and claw with an inv save is pretty felxible.

I am not sure where all the GH power weapon hate comes from. MoW is not a dependable source for ap2 as is a power axe for the reasons I listed above.

I take back what I say about the fist/claw option on WGPL in power armor. With no inv save, it is still pretty iffy for challenges. You could just go with one or the other depending on what you are sticking with them and will still have a better attack value due to being a WG despite not having two specialist weapons.

Just go with both MotW and a Power Fist, when mixed with the Wolf Standard I have found it Murder.

Before 6th edition I did just that and suffered through many rounds of combat with that GH missing his single powerfist attack. With the power axe granting an additional attack for two ccw and it being ap2 with a strength bonus, I think it is clearly a better option.

It's a matter of points-efficiency. If you're not running a Wolf Guard in your squad, then the power weapon + MOTW on GH is probably a necessity.
