So recently got some space wolves to try out and wanted to use them as allies for my imperial guard. Wanted to try them out for fun but also try to be a bit of a match for an opponent. So for my allies Space Wolves detachment. Hq Rune priest 100pts(divination) Troops x10 grey hunters 190pts x2 melta guns drop pod x10 grey hunters 190pts x2 melta guns drop pod Elites x5 Wolf Guard 265pts (might throw in another power axe or maul) x1 combi plasma/chainfist x1combi plasma/power axe x2 combi plasma/power sword x1assault cannon/power sword drop pod Heavy support Long fangs 140pts x5 missile launchers Imperial guard main detachment Hq CCS 90pts Lascannon Regimental standard Melta bombs Troops x2 PCS 80pts x2 autocannons x3 Infantry squads 180pts(not blobbed) x3 autocannons x3 infantry squads 235pts(rune priest joins this blob) x3 plasma guns x3 power axe x2melta bombs Fast attack vendetta 130pts Heavy support x1 LRBT x1 LRBT Fortifications Aegis defence line 100pts Quad gun This was a quick list I wanted to put up before work so Comments are welcome! Im not sure what I wanted to do with the guard troops, I thought about having them run up the board to support the pod assault by space wolves.

I would drop a LRBT for another vendetta. Infact I would drop 2 for 2 vendettas.
How about some long fangs to back up the heavy weapons. They are solid behind the aline and add alot to your fire power. I find the LRBT (espectially AP3) much less useful this edition.
You payless for 6 long rangs with 3 missiles and 2 LC. Automatically Appended Next Post: The most a LRBT can really do to a tank is 1 hull point, but 5 long fangs can hunt them and also really increase your odds of shooting down enemy flyers.

I figured that with a vendetta and a quad gun I would have the skies pretty much covered(I dont have anyone in my meta playing the flying circus of crons), and with 1 vendetta and 2 grey hunter squads with melta guns I would have anti tank covered. The most I could do is lose 1 LRBT because I was going to use the LRBT's to provide cover while the blob advances.
The long fangs are nice but the most I could lose would be another battle tank, which I would have to really hope that my drop pod wolves tie up the enemy enough to let my blob advance without taking much fire.

I think I could find room for the long fangs as they will help with the gunline portion of the army.
Updated the list above.

I'd be inclined to go manticore instead of one of the LRBT's to be honest
Other than that looks solid, I'd be inclined to avoid going mad with Longfangs, afterall, who wants to be that guy!

I could do a manticore, the only reason I usually go with the LRBT is because I generally dont have much that is ap3 and with the higher armor it also makes the LRBT a bit harder to pen.
With the long fangs the most I can do is just have 1 squad of them as they are just the allied detachment.

I think you can do without the wolf guard. The rest of the SW ally list look great.
Use the recovered points to fill in a third IG heavy or some other IG goodness.

Oh yea I know I could get a much better list without the wolf guard but Im just giving the a shot for now. I had built a list where I only used 2 grey hunter squads with 2 meltas a piece in drop pods and then I still had the rune priest. I then also had the long fangs but they took a pod. They started on the board and their pod was empty so the 2 grey hunter squads come in turn 1 and the long fangs boost my gunline.
My imperial guard is where Im trying to boost up and see what I can get for them best.
I know this army lacks mainly because I have so much invested in the allies but I figured if I have a decent gunline to provide fire support, then with all the deep striking pods of troops and termies my opponent will get thrown off a little. But this is still more so a list for fun and less competitive.

Alright well after a game today, I had to used a LRBT instead of the longfangs as I dont have them yet, and I stayed with only 1 vendetta to have more template weapons. So basically it was a team game as well my army and another guard army vs 2 chaos armies and it was close. The opponents managed to get first blood which is what we lost by. Basically for the first 2 turns it was my army vs the 2 chaos armies because my allied guard player had a lot of tanks and I had a lot of infantry so we deployed accross our board edge. Our opponents had 3 or 4 squads infiltrating so they put them on my side and teamed up on me. Luckily with my line my army managed to hold for a bit. the 2 grey hunter squads came in popped a land raider and rhino and managed to do some damage afterwards but died after 1 turn. So it was turn 2 and time for my termies to come in. There were 2 major threats coming at me some chaos dude arhiman with a squad of thousand suns or huron black heart with a squad of chaos spawn. So I went for huron. when I shot I only managed to do 2 wounds to the thousand suns. Then some obliterators(3) fired plasma cannons and arhiman fired some crazy s8 ap1 bolts at me and killed all my termies in 1 go. Most of the game was popping transports and my LRBT blasting marines like no other. Obviously it was my fault for not spacing my termies out more and I should have gone for huron and tried wiping out his squad so I would have had a little more impact. Basically all my grey hunters were dead in after they dropped in so when my termies came in, they stood alone. So they were bound to die as they stood between my line of guard and 2 armies of chaos. They did not have a glorious death...it was terrible lol. So now I am thinking about using a CF/SS TDA WG. Is this a good option to soak up shots so all my termies arent wiped away in 1 go? Also this army was actually more competitive than I had planned. It managed to hold off 2 chaos armies for basically the whole game. It wasnt until turn 5 that my opponents made it 2 inches into my deployment to finally get line breaker.

This list makes no sense as guard being the main detachment.
You've thrown way too many points into the space wolves, they might as well be the main. Also the guard units you've chosen, can all be part of a single platoon or squad. That'd let you access more SW stuff.
You'd lose 1 infantry squad (probably with an AC) and 1 PCS. No one will cry about losing a PCS, and the one infantry squad isn't a big deal either, especially as it's only packing an AC.
If you want a TDA/SS tank, don't give him anything other than a Paxe. Keep it cheap, you're expecting it to die! Throwing a CF on him will just make it a bigger loss.
If you do make SW the primary, I'd recommend a LW. They're fun and a pretty much "fire and forget" unit.
Out of curiosity, are the SW more points costly than the IG?

Well as of now the wolves are like 700pts and the guard is 1250 something, I dont remember exact points off hand. Right now Ive really considered having the wolves as my main detachment and there were really 2 options.
With the list above for its primary detachment to be IG and competitive I would drop the WG and give their pod to the long fangs and with remaining points add more guard like a second vendetta and so on. The pod going to the long fangs would drop empty and the long fangs would sit behind my line for additional fire support, but the idea with the empty pod is too drop the 2 grey hunter squads turn 1.
If the primary detachment is SW then I would lose the platoon that runs up(close oriented) and have 1 leman russ and 1 vendetta along with the CCS. Then I would fill the long fang drop pod with a x12 grey hunter unit with 2 plasma guns and after I drop a leman russ I have 265points.
I will create another thread for a SW's army with Guard allies in support.
