So, I'm looking to expand my Rohan Force from 250 to 500 points. I would, ideally, like these additions to come from the Rohan force, since, well, I like the unity of it all, though I am willing to get other Kingdoms of Men models too.

My current force is:

Eomer, Marshal of the Riddermark
Horse

4x Riders of Rohan
War Banner, 2 Throwing Spears

2x Outriders
Horses and Bows

250 in Total.

Now, I'd wanted to expand it and hopefully address some of the issues I'd had in my previous games. I was thinking I'd need a new hero, so looking through the book, I decided to go with Erkenbrand since he gives you the option to upgrade any Riders of Rohan to Fight Value 4 for +1Point. So, with Erkenbrand in tow, I decided I could buy another Riders Box, giving me two bowmen I'd use as mounted Outriders and another four Riders. This together, along with Erknebrand's upgrade to my Riders, comes in at roughly 440. Ideally, I want something that doesn't need to charge people and can take on multiple foes. So, I was considering some Sons of Eorl or some Royal Guard.

So, what do you think of the changes I've planned already and what do you think I should do with my remaining 60 points or so?

Thanks in advance!

If you don't have a pure Rohan cavalry list, you're doing something wrong.

You may want something a bit more survivable to hold objectives or areas of importance like the area between two forests. You could create traps for the enemy as well - by having a large phalanx of heavily armoured Warriors of Minas Tirith holding a wide area, you could force your enemy to either attack your cavalry, your infantry or split his forces and take on both. This would work well against Isengard or Eastern Kingdom armies - they're small and elite armies, allowing you to pick off enemies one by one. The tactic would be less effective against Mordor or Moria. You may want to hold off on this until you increase your army to 750 points.

Royal Guard I believe are good as heavy cavalry, so I'd definitely get maybe 3-6 of them.

Erkenbrand is really good I hear, so stick with him. The +1 to fight will really pay for itself.

I hope it's been of some use instead of just flogging you some Gondorians!

So are you saying that a Rohan list should have ALL mounted troops? I'm currently building a rohan army myself.

Pretty much. The army's strength is in the cavalry. Warriors of Rohan are incredibly average. You should only be buying boxes of warriors for when a horse dies!

Thanks a lot, Ex, that has helped a lot indeed!

I think, like you say, I'll get some Mounted Royal Guard (shouldn't be too hard to convert) and Erkenbrand, which should hopefully give me a strong sizeable force! Any more ideas are much appreciated though!

Yeah, I really appreciate the extra movement the cavalry have, very useful indeed!

And the extra attack when charging and knock to the ground if you win, doubling your attacks! Cavalry can be really useful in the game as long as you're keeping out of the range of enemy infantry.

Yeah, extra attacks are even more useful if you're a cavalry model! And I've had a fair bit of practice now at doing the whole hit-and-run thing!
