Subject: Space Wolves - Lost Company and making a Wolf Guard List

Hey everyone!
I know this topic has been thrown around a lot, but I thought I'd look for a bit more guidance before spending money on an army that doesn't make sense in the 40k universe.
Basically, I'm really keen to throw together a Wolf Guard Termie list just for a bit of fun. I'd obviously need to use Logan Grimnar as my HQ choice to make the Termie list viable, and here is where my predicament starts.
I'm not a massive fan of the traditional Space Wolf colours and the limitations in terms of customisation and personalisation is the only thing that puts me off of a Space Wolf army. So I want to paint my army in a radically different way, basically changing the colour scheme and making them more unique. I know there are no SW successors, so that options out of the window, but I have been reading about 'Lost Companies' which, from what I've read, would be the best explanation for different colours. I'd still have to come up with a suitable reason for them becoming 'lost' though!
So yeah, I just have a couple points that I would like opinions on before I start buying termies:
1. For casual gaming among friends and maybe at the FLGS, would it be too much of a stretch to make a count-as Logan Grimnar with the same equipment to act as my lost Wolf Lord and make it possible to use the Termie list? I feel like it seems a little unreasonable to claim this lost Wolf Lord would have the same skills and resources as the Great Wolf, but this would be my only option to use a lost company Termie list. So yeah, a Wolf Lord counting as Grimnar, would you allow it? Perhaps my Wolf Lord thought himself the best candidate for Great Wolf but was rejected, making him grumpy enough to pack up and leave to prove himself.
2. Following on from that, I don't think its too much of a stretch to assume that after years and years of battle away from the fang, the only ones from this small warband left would be the most powerful and experience with the best equipment they have available. I imagine that this list will involve at most 10-15 Termies and my proxy Grimnar. If this gang of renegade wolves left the Fang with the ships, equipment and the Termie armour of their Great Company, do you think that it is reasonable for them to end up as a majority Termie warband? Basically, what I'm asking is, do you think after years and years of isolation the company would still have working Termie army enough for the last members of their group? Perhaps only the most veteran warriors from the Great company left with their Wolf Lord, leaving the less experienced back at the Fang.
3. Is the repainting of armour and changing of insignia considered heretical? I remember hearing a while back that Space Marines don't repaint their armour because it angers the machine spirit inside, but I'm not sure if it would be that big of a deal.
4. What sort of timeline would we be looking at here? I'd say that this group would have broken off recently, in the time of Grimnar at least, 999.m41, but to allow for the creation of my own character, I'd want it to be a little later to allow for my own Wolf Lord to rise, then leave.
And that's about it for now! I know it's alot, but please, let me know what you think. Thanks for reading!

I have a SW army that doesn't use any of the usual SW colors and have had no problem using them in local games and some tourneys. As long as the weapons are WYSIWYG and I tell people up front that these red marines are not BA, they are SW, they don't seem to have a problem.
I like the 13th company colors and the old 13 company models used to have mixed chaos parts in with the marks taken off. It was a very interesting approach. The old 13 company list was all veterans too so having a WG army is totally in character.

What color are you thinking? If you look at my gallery you'll see my Vlka Fenryka (space wolves) are dark grey. I think a lot of players are going this way because it makes more sense...

You can use whatever color scheme you want, and just call that the preferred scheme of your wolf lord (pick one of the more obscure companies).
The Lost Company running around in tons of terminator armor makes no sense at all; they are a bunch of werewolves using whatever scraps they can find.

The original 13th company hounded magnus the red into the warp, which would corrupt anyone. Perhaps some swirling purple, red and pink demon-y colours so the background story could be that the 13th's wolf guard have returned, armor corrupt but souls not? Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh i forgot 2 say,the original lords were the most powerful so oit is easily possible for a lost lord having relic gear. Heck, with a bit of fast talking you could justify having ur leader as a bleedin' demon prince! Automatically Appended Next Post: *it

I remember back in 3rd edition the codex said the blank stone on the wheel thing originally did stand for the company that followed russ into the warp but it eventually came to stand for all the space wolves who had been killed in defense of the Imperium or some such. So the term lost company doesn't have to mean the original 13th company. It could be any number of warbands that have disappeared over the millennia.
I say go for it. In a galaxy where whole chapters of space marines can disappear for a thousand years at a time and come back without any warning, I don't see a problem with there being a wolf lord capable of matching Logan's skills running around with his personal guard terminators is whatever color armour they think is cool.

Heck, if someone said to me that they wouldn't play against my Wolves because they were red, I would be surprised. Especially considering the number of people who don't paint their models at all...
They're your models, paint them how you like! WYSIWYG is fairly important, however.

You know what's cool for the 13th company? Blood Angels allies.
You can take death company, model them as Wulfen and bam, you have a crazy assault unit which is pretty fluffy. Lets you have some fun with the different models and rules. Not my idea, I saw it somewhere (I forget though or I'd reference it).
If you remember the Eye of Terror codex, there was a 13th company in there. They had fluff about the SW taking bits of chaos armor to replace pieces of their own that had been damaged in combat. So I'm not sure how an all TDA 13th company would look considering terminator armor is quite rare, and there would be very few wolf guard in the company anyway.
However, you can do what you think is cool XD and I'm sure no one would mind if you used a "count as" for Logan!

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

I can't ever see there being a problem using a model as a Counts-as Logan Grimnar, especially if you follow the WYSIWYG rules, and even more so if you are planning on playing friendly games.
I'm personally planning on an all-Deathwing army with my Blood Angels Sergeant from Space Hulk as a counts-as Belial. Both models have Termi armor, Storm Bolters and a sword.
I think your idea is a great one, and there's no reason they have to be 13th company. Having them be a small warband that left is entirely possible.
