Hey dakka, so im planning a fluffy Pre heresy IF army from the FW book betrayal (because fists wont be done for a while im starting with this list to get the basics)

I like the idea of Drop pod assaults, i always have, is it a major / favoured tactic of the Fists ? or is it more of something they can do because all the legions have pods ?

Or would it be more fluffy to play a defensive / seige list with lots of troops and / or terminators and tanks / Dreads ?
bear in mind this is not meant to be competitive, just fluffy but also to fit the FOC

Remember with the Legions you have hundreds of companies encompassing tens of thousands of marines so there's no real restriction on what you can take.
I mean a company of Imperial Fists who specialised in a drop pod assault from one of the Legions ships is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Even thinking about it from, Ullanor to the Heresy the IF's mission was to defend Terra. What better response to an enemy making land fall than to catch them between an impenetrable fortress wall and a bunch of pissed off Space Marines who just appeared out of drop pods behind them?

As Voodoo Chile said, the Legions are so large and flexible, basically anything would work.

The whole point of the Legions was to re-take the galaxy basically, and they'd be much better at doing that with drop-pods than defensive tactics. Whilst different Legions have different specialities, they would all also employ the core Space Marine tactics IMHO.

So yeah, go ahead! Maybe some slightly siege-oriented things like more melta's or flamers would help, but I don't see a problem with the Drop Pod idea.

The Space Marine Legions would have been good at all kinds of things. It really makes no sense for one Legion to "specialize" in a certain kind of warfare, as they'd be crusading all across the galaxy, sometimes by themselves. If they weren't adept at a wide range of tactics and strategies, they might find themselves hung up on some planet they weren't prepared to conquer.

Paint your Marines as Imperial Fists, and have fun with whatever kind of army you want to build.

And Space Marines would rarely be used in defense. The idea of the Imperial Fists being "defensive specialists" always makes me chuckle. Yeah, they defended the Imperial Palace during the Heresy, but that was because they had to, and they where there. Leaving Space Marines to defend anything other than the most absurdly valuable targets (like Terra) would be kinda pointless. Better to use hundreds of thousands of regular troops.

I will probably do a first company drop pod theme then
the other option was the 'seige' style list, what would it incorporate ? out of interest.

A)the drop pod thing is more space wolves,4 example ragnar blackmane's great company uses it a lot
B)try Angron's legion,then you can field a primarch. Not just any but angron,THE most badass in close combay

A) this is pre heresy so no ragnar.
B) someone in my group is doing WE and my favourite legion is the fists so no thanks.

The Imperial Fists are generally the poster-boys of boring, yet practical. That should be your mindset when thinking how they would act in combat. Nothing fancy just boring, effective tactics, that's the Imperial Fists. Of course that doesn't mean bad tactics or anything, and they are fully capable of hit and running.

It's perfectly reasonable to do a drop pod themed army for another reason also: Up until the Heresy the Imperial Fists were the tactical reserve of the Emporers Forces meaning they had to be able to rapidly redeploy were needed. I cant think of a more rapid form of deployment than drop pod assault (well ok may be teleportation...but still )
