Hey Dakkites. Just finished my tester scheme for my Lothern Sea Guard. I was wondering if anyone had the time to C&C it. I appreciate that this forum is for based models only, but all the base will be getting added is some flock, in the style of early 90's white dwarf models - I'm waiting for a bag to arrive in the post. Despite it's many flaws, I'm quite pleased with this one. About 6 hours to do it, but there was a lot of messing about. Hopefully the other 9 will go much faster...

I'm eager to get some C&C before I start the next couple.

Good parts for me - Am oddly proud of the seaweed on the spear. There's about 9 shades of green in there! I also like the colour of the robes, and the pale gold/bronze with the silver.

Bad parts - Am annoyed with the outline/highlight on the waves (Hem and shield) just cannot get them crisp. May have to redo it with a drybrush instead of trying to do it by hand. Gems are OK, but could be better - I'll have to refine my technique, but I'll get plenty of practice - there are about 50 gems on a ten man squad!

Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how to improve with them. Onto the pics!

Thats an awesome paint job except for the base... you have to do something about that base. I love the bright colors on the model, but maybe bring it down a bit with some earthy tones to give it some contrast.

I think you're right. I was planning to do the bases in a retro style as a nod to the last time I was into warhammer, but I think they'll look too garish. I'll maybe do them similar to my 40k bases, but with browns instead of greys.

Wow...

I read the into text, thinking this wasn't going to be great, but i scrolled down and was pleasantly supprised. I'm strangely attracted to it...

However, your right about the highlight on the wave, it looks a little out of place.
And the dragon seems a little to purple, which matches the cloth on the actual elf, and doesn't look right. purhapse make it a little more red?

What kind of base you thinking of doing?

I'm thinking now ill do the bases similar to these below, but with browns instead of black and greys:

Reason being I already have everything I need to do it.

As good a reason as any

Nice figure, tight painting and a good colour scheme. I actually like the retro green base, it used to be the norm years ago but it's something you just don't see anymore!

I was liking the idea of a retro base, but in reality, it was drawing the eye away from the model, instead of enhancing it. I muted it down tonight, and I think it helps the model pop a bit better. There's a bit much static grass on there though. I'll probably trim it back a bit once the glue is dry:

Though a fresh photo from that angle just showed me another mistake from when I tried out the shield dragon as green. Macro photography is a git!

I was going to suggest using a more muted green for the base, but I like what you've got there a whole lot more.

Nice job

This base made my eyes hurt. ^^

Seriously.
The new one increased the look of this already great looking model... like 1000 fold.
; )

I like it the model and base really go together. I liked the marine colour scheme aswell..

I'm currently experimenting with bases, luckily around xmas time so used the corks from the numerous bottles of wine.

I'm a bit awkward when it comes to bases. Last time I was into the hobby, they were all goblin green with flock, and that was that. I'm not sure i like all the massive bases with piles of stuff all over them. Particularly on 'regular' models like terminators etc. trying to find a happy medium that looks ok, without taking as long as the model itself.

I was the same, all my guys had nice bases that just had sand and the odd tuft of grass.. but then someone made a comment on bases and it kicked of my OCD, so I ripped off all my old bases and went crazy with lava, skulls and whatever I fancy at the time.

I tend to edit my guys quite a bit lol but at least they get better each time

Just had a nosy at your angels sanguine. The bases are not too ott for my tastes. Quite conservative compared to some I've seen!

I don't want to draw attention away from the figure, I just want to give the impression of a harsh environment and give them a little more character. Plus it gives me a break from the red and black scheme that's a pain the arse

Have you looked into resin bases?

They can be quite nice, not too crazy, but it gives the model a little 'kick' - if you get me. Give them some sand, and a little flock (depending on the type of base) and your good to go.

I've seen them around, and some look pretty good, I'll admit, but I've not considered them for my own armies yet. Spent too much on minis, never mind buying fancy bases!
