Hello Dakka readers, posers and posters. I was wondering about ogre characters in an ogre list. It seems to me that it is hard to have many characters in a ogre lists since you are paying a lott exstra for them because of the ekstra "fat" on them. However, you still need the leadership buble, banner, and a decent mage. How do people aproach this and at what point does the points no longer get in the way?

While I would not say mandatory, a good ogre list usualy contains a tyrant for the better leadership. The BSB is mandatory and at a certain point level you need to start using magic dices since they are just lying there,

At 2500 I could picture having a tyrant, bannerbearer, level 4 mage with gut magic and one or two level 1 beast mages. The beast cantrip spell just seems very good. I know the fire mage is good because of the fire breath, but lore of the beasts seems good to make my ogres S5/T5.

What are your advices? And how do you use ogre characters?

at 2500 you will find it VERY hard to fit in all those characters, while still having enough fat in your core.
at 2500 I tend to run (and see in other lists) a lvl4 slaughtermaster general, bruiser BSB and a firebelly/second butcher. the general goes in an irongut unut with the banner of discipline, giving you a ld9 bubble. that, combined with the bsb rerolls is often more than enough. the second mage is just for flavour really...

Tyrants are left out of competitive Ogre lists. The competitive Ogre list runs a lvl4 Slaughtermaster as the general, a BSB, and 1-2 Butchers/Firebellies.

You are correct Ogres don't load up on characters. they need to and it will actually hurt the army. An ogre army wins with its Core. Your heroes/Lord are there to support your Core so they can carry the day.

Slaughtermaster, BSB Bruiser. Butcher and Firebutt aren't necessary but you can use them.

But is not the LS9 Tyrant a good adition to the army? I play SW in 40k and LS8 is not a safe bet.

Not really, because you are giving up a Lvl4 to take him and his combat prowess isn't enough to compansate.

Plus the SM can be Ld9 with the Standard of Discipline in the unit. he can also be almost as good as a tyrant in melee, while also being a lvl4.

Well I see the wisdom in what uyou are saying. But I am rather facinated by the idea of a tyrant. How would one best use a tyrant if one where to be put in a list?

There is the Tyrant with double Firebellies and a BSB list. Its the best the Tyrant gets, although the setup is still weaker than having a Lvl4.

It's unfortunate, but once they ruled that ironfist means casters can take armor, the reason for Tyrants went down a fair amount.

Tyrants are fun ideas and are powerful, but guttmagic is nice and cheap and SM are powerhouse fighters.

Heck, in the old book the only reason people took Tyrants was because to get a SM you had to have a Tyrant. And then there was the Tenderizer...

I wonder how I can use a Hunter on foot. I converted one from the Thunderhusk's model so I would like to know how to equip and use it.

Don't. Just don't. use him as a unique looking maneater. The hunter cannot be made to work.

The hunter cannot be made to work.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that. Its just that there are many other units in the army book that do a better job at what the hunter tries to do. Sure, he has high leadership but he can't join units besides sabertusks nor can he be the general of the army. His shooting capabilities are below average and the few things that are unique to him are less than impressive. I would say its not that hes unplayable its just that hes a poor choice and will probably not make up for his points which could easy be spent better elsewhere.

Could you use hunters, cats and maneaters and have an outflanking infiltrate unit? The other ogers would catch up pretty fast with the fats move. The cats are amasing.

More than Slaughter Masters being better than Tyrants, I think it's more of a general trend that wizard characters are better than fight-y ones. The only non-combat character I see in lists nowadays is the BSB. Seems like every list ever has 3 characters: the lvl4 General, the BSB, and the lvl1-2 backup caster.
