Hello all, new to the game. After trying to get into Warhammer and 40K competitively for several years, and not having much success because the number of people who have armies to compete against is so few in my area, I started getting interested in LotR SBG and it's new rules set the Hobbit. I figured I can build scenarios and then field both sides having guests play one, instead of waiting for an opponent with thier own custom army.

My question then is, In addition to the BRB for the stats, do I still need the faction books to play just specific scenarios? Say I wanted to build the warg attack or weathertop, are guides for all that included in the respective feature book? eg Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers? Or do I need the faction books as well for special model rules?

All I have so far is Escape from Goblin town. I haven't played yet, but I'm looking forward to it, because the rules look more streamlined and fun than the other lines. I particularly like how the loser of a duel gets pushed back an inch, that looks like it will keep combat more dynamic, and force players to think more tactically when they are trying to lock down an enemy in mellee.

Hello, to answer your question:

You will need the BRB, Plus the relavant sourcebook (Like 40k and codexies) to create your own scenario's it also has inside examples of objectives that can be used. you should'nt need the Fellowship/TT/ROTK books, however inside them there are some Nice scenario's. In the BRB there are set scenario's for:

The Hobbit:-
  • Roast Mutton

  • The Chase

  • The Capture

  • Flight to Freedom

  • Breakout

  • Out of the Frying Pan

  • ...And into the Fire

  • LOTR SBG:-
  • The Last Alliance

  • The Attack at Weathertop

  • Balins Tomb

  • The Bridge of Kazad-dum

  • Ambush at Amon Hen

  • The Seige of Helms Deep

  • The Battle of the Pelenor Fields

  • The Black Gate Opens

  • And Rules and ways to create your own scenario's

I hope this helps and your idea works

Edit: Escape from goblin town is one of the best starter boxed sets i've played in a Long time. already played all of the scenario's within they make really good games just dont try to change the turn limit, one game lasted 5 hours! lol

First off, thank you very much for the list of scanarios, that is very helpful to know.

So if I was to build a Balin's Tomb scenario to play with friends, I'd need to get the BRB, The Free People's sourcebook for the Fellowship player, and the Moria and Angmar book for the goblin player?
Well, I knew the hobby wasn't going to be cheap.

    In a nutshell. Yup.

Unfortunatly Yes. It *is* expencive, but on a posative note smaller games (points wise, im talking upto 250 points) its very enjoyable. wich in Money terms isnt too bad (that is, if your only collecting for yourself)

But the finished product that you want to do will just be Amazing, I have a feeling if you do this you'll get a few more players into this rather enjoyable game

Don't buy directly from GW, unless money is no object. You can find better prices elsewhere.

Thanks for the replies, it does look like it will be cool when I have a scenario or two complete. I'll probably just focus on getting the goblin town set painted and make sure I get plenty of games in for that first. Then worry about expanding into new scenes.

I do have some online shops I go to instead of direct from GW most of the time.

With all the goblins, you can probably field an easy dwarf army, led by the dwarf heros you already have.

Just a little hint, Every evil model in goblin town = 400pts ish

    Thorins company = 1000pts ish

Thorins company is hard as nails but easyly surrounded. mwahhaa.

You could buy a box or 2 of dwarfs, and have your dwarf heros you already have lead those warbands.

Thanks for the suggestion, nold, but I'll probably stick to scenario driven play for now. Then I can see if I generate any interest among my friends, and move up towards list building then.

There are also rules floating around for the old warband system. I forget if it had another name, but basically started you off with like 50 points in models and through scenario play, you basically gain experience and can improve models to better versions and eventually heros. Like starting with 5 basic warriors, and after a game or 2 getting the leveled up to have a couple become dwarf rangers, or iron guard, or even Kazan guard. I know I had it at one time, will have to see if I can find those rules again, as it offers yet another fun way to get into and play the game.

The only "hobby" GW is interested in is lining their pockets with your money.
