I *might* be moving to Ft Hood soon and I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion. I'd rather not live in Kileen...because Kileen. A buddy suggested Round Rock so I'm looking for any other suggestions.

Wish I could help you out here man. (Un)Fortunately, I've never been to Hood. If you were asking about Campbell or Carson, I could definitely help more.

Alas, I am also interested, in the unlikely event that I get put on orders for that hole...

Round Rock, Leander are both excellent, but a bit of a distance.

It does bring you dangerously close to the wiener legions though. Don't worry if you hear howling that will chill the marrow of your bones. Its just the younglings hunting badgers by the pale moon light.

I left Hood in '95, so it has been a while. I do know some folks liked Copperas Cove (west of Post) and also know a couple folks that lived north of post in the sticks...

Yeah. If it's anything like the area around Fort Bragg (and I assume it will be cause most major bases I've lived at in the past were) it'll be surrounded by a 'ghetto' of poor communities with higher than normal crimes rates and a few upscale communities with houses that cost too much.

That sounds like Killeen allright.

Leander is fine. It has a hyper competitive school district that fast tracks kids to college. Georgetown and Round Rock are fine as well. All three are basically where the conservatives who live in Austin live. Liberty Hill is very country, less residences there.

I don't know anything about Temple.
Lampassas is country.

I don't even KNOW anymore.

Temple or Belton on I-35 would be ok. Bit of a drive, but better rhan commuting from Round Rock (which is still a good town, if you decided to live there). Killeen sucks, don't live there. Copperas Cove (where I grew up) is getting kind of run down. Lampasas and Gatesville are podunks.

I know right? FML.
There is a bright spot though: my orders are to a unit I can't be a part of without a several month TDY; so when I bump off to the right unit I'll try to swindle my career manager into sending me somewhere else.

Copperas Cove isn't as bad, and You're a UAV pilot right? So you might be working at West Fort hood anyway. It has it's ghetto spots, but it has a more small town feel to it, compared to Killeen, which has a don't go out at night feel.

Harker Heights isn't too bad either.

My old BN CDR lived in Harker Heights. Seemed like a decent area.

We lived on the outskirts of Killeen, right up against the post rang areas (tank fire made my garage door shake like someone chucked a basketball at it).

I loved Hood. The ranges were really good, and there was enough training area that you could actually do decent movements.

They fly out of Gray AAF, which without knowing Hood very well seems like its in the southern half kind of where the angle in the general L shape of the post.
Is that West Fort?

Jake,
Is that why 2500 sq ft homes with a full acre back yard go for a song in Kileen? Because honestly after living under the approach end of Luke for 4 years the noise is fine. It's having to put out claymores every night that I'm worried about. In other words I'd rather not live next to Pvt Snuffy's crack house extravaganza.

When I first got thee my wife was still going through flight school at Rucker, and I rented a NASTY little apartment where claymores and trip flares were standard equipment.

When my wife joined me we rented a little house (the one I mentioned). The neighborhood was decent.
About half were military (one of my tank commanders lived a couple blocks away) but the rest were civilians. We didn't have any problems.

I loved hearing the tanks fire (and loved cntributing my share to the noise when I was on the ranges), just as I like having MH47s thunder over my house where I live now. I jokingly call it The Sound of Freedom and honestly never get sick of it. I can hear tanks fire where we live now, but they are a good distance south of me.

At that point there was actually gang violence ON post at Hood (some poor major got capped in his front yard in front of his family on post in a drive by) but the part of Killeen we lived in was nice.

Again though, that was 92-95 so it has been a good long time and I know stuff has changed.

Anyway, good luck in the new assignment. I do hope you enjoy your time there as much as my wife and I did.

Thanks Jake, and others, it looks like I need to put a call in to my branch manager anyway. Seems HRC might have assigned me without bothering to consult him. We'll make the best of whatever assignment we get.

I'm pleasantly suprised by the housing options I've been looking at in Copperas Cove, alas I'm footmobile until I can get a pass to AZ and brig my truck over so I haven't really been physically looking at homes. The ones I have found are both spacious and priced well below my BAH even including utilities. What concerns me is the sheer number of homes for sale. If I'm only here for 18 months I'll probably never unload this house so I have to either be willing to pay for it for a few years or keep it indefinately. I'm not sure I want a house next to Hood forever. I'm honestly trying to avoid renting but I may be forced; my crystal ball says sand in my future if branch doesn't come through with new orders (in which case sand is still in my future just not from a unit I want to get away from)

I honestly don't see the point in buyingnear Hood right now. You can get a good deal, but if you are in it less than 10 years before you have to sell all you have no equity in it and may as well rent. No way the Army lets you stay there near that long. That way you also avoid the hassle of having to sell.

You try to sell it, or rent it out, or suck it up. When we went from Ft Bliss to GA I made mortgage payments on an empty house in El Paso for 10 months before we finally sold it at a loss.

The joys of the military...

Add in that when many Americans retire, they've had a chance to build equity in a home or even have their home paid off so that the reduced income that comes with being retired is livable. Military folks don't get that advantage in most cases....

Right now I need to unload our place at Stewart we bought in 2006. I stayed here with the kids when my wife got transferred to Bragg in 2009 because we had a senior in high school and then knew my wife was deploying for 18 months. No point in selling at a loss and getting a place up there when she wasn't gonna be there. She came 'home' on weekends when not deployed. Now she is at Redstone in AL, got there in August. BUT she will PCS again this coming summer and we don't know where yet. But we do know that will only be a year long move. So, do I sell my house at a loss and move my horses and dogs and daughter for a year so that I can live with my wife? Honestly it is a hard choice. Add in we may not be able to sell our house and have to deal with the payments and it gets harder.

Damn... that blows.

They ought to have programs to help with ya'll for this.

I know in some case ya'll get housing stipends? Is that only for rental or could it be used for any home?

You get a Basic Housing Allowance which is based on where you are stationed. You can use it for rent or a mortgage or what ever. It does not help too much when you are trying to maintain two households like my wife and I currently are. When she got back from her last deployment (this past May) but before she went to Alabama we bought her a 34ft trailer RV. The monthly cost for the on post RV lot plus my payments on that are cheaper than renting her an apartment would have been, plus at the end of it I have an RV... At least initially she will take that where ever she goes this coming summer.

But you know how it is. Us veterans and active duty folks sponge off you tax payers, so don't feel bad.

Here's the debate I have in my head:
The Army is going to give me about $3500 for dislocation. Which will cover closing costs. And I can double down on payments with BAH even without my wife working and have 75% of my base to spend. There's an off chance I'll like it here and if that happens HRC will never move me.

You get a dislocation allowance to both offset a sale and get a new place. A lot of people rent thier gak our and keep it forever.
