Hello all,

Earlier I posted the plan for my army and am awaiting the final bits in the mail.

When everything arrives I plan to paint everything quickly as possible in assembly line fashion. My goal with miniatures is always to paint to "Tabletop" quality and no further, otherwise I would end up with some nice look models but also some grey because I spent so much time on just a few.

I'm curious if anyone can comment on my colour scheme and painting plan:

1) Wash sprues, clip, and assemble all the models. Leave large weapons off for better painting.
2) Glue 1:1 Mix of Small & Medium Rock Ballast (Dollarama) to base.
3) Spray everything with Army Painter Coloured Primer: Alien Purple
4) Dry brush entire model with Scream Pink (Citadel)
5) Paint Carapaces with Mephiston Red (Citadel)
6) Dry brush Carapaces with 1:1 Mix of Mephiston Red & Skull White (Citadel)
7) Paint base Fortress Grey (Citadel)
8) Sepia wash base (Liquitex)
9) Dry brush base with 1:1 Mix of Fortress Grey & Skull white (Citadel)
10) Paint on 1:1 Mix of Clear Mixwax and Minwax Polyshades Classic Black
11) Spray Matte with Army Painter Matte Spray
12) Clump on Scorched Earth Static Grass (Citadel) with PVA glue

I'm hoping it will look something like this:

I think you are right on.

The trick with dipping is to get as much of the detail out of the way before the dip.

Good luck!!

I think you might want to find a color that is more like a light purple or lavender to drybrush with. I think a pink over a purple isn't going to turn out the way you think it will. Also, if you do the carapace in red, adding white to the base for highlight will result in pink. You might want to try an orange or mix in some bleached bone with your red.

I agree on the orange and bleached bone as highlights for red carapace. When you start mixing red and white it makes it look very pink. Trust me...

I had to go back over all of my highlights with blazing orange+white to get it less pink.

I find a good highlight for red is Dwarf Flesh (I don't know what colour it is in the new range). You have to do it in a couple of stages like any highlight, maybe a 30/70 mix flesh/red then 50/50 then pure dwarf flesh for the final highlight. It's slightly orange, rather than pink, so it gives a natural looking highlight without looking neither too pink nor too orange.

For what it's worth, I use red carapaces on my Tyranids

I would advise doing a test piece at each stage before you start spraying/drybrushing the whole army.

Dip can work very well on Tyranids.
