So, somewhere back in the mists of time (possibly last August?), my local
GW had a painting competition inspired by the Blanchitsu article on converting the plastic nurgle lord. And only 14 or so weeks after the deadline passed, I've finally completed my entry!
Abathiah Schulk, conducting a legitimate business transaction
Abathiah is supposed to be an underhive crime lord who has grown monstrously rich (and corpulent) through his stranglehold on supplies of food, high-powered weaponry and great hats. I 'adapted' the name from Gormenghast's Abiatha Swelter and tried to create a character who might fit in with Mr Blanche's awesomely grotesque creations - at least in terms of the overall aesthetic; I don't claim to be anywhere near as good as he is. With that in mind, I tried to stick to a reasonably limited pallette, used the most ornate plasma pistol I could find, added a bunch of superfluous spikes and air hoses and gave him what I can only assume is
40k's equivalent of a sweet pimp hat. To reinforce the character's arrogance and the way in which he feels able to conduct his affairs with impunity, I decided to have him stand next to a wanted poster of himself. I like to think his trashy stomach tattoo, flamboyant hat and the remains of an old frock coat that did not quite survive Abathiah's expansion combine to give you a nice sense of his delusions of street grandeur.
One of the perils of revisiting old models like this is that you do inevitably discover bits where you've improved quite a bit in the intervening months and that you're therefore not terribly satisfied with now (some of this greenstuff work is
rough!), but overall I like the mini. He's a fun little character. And most importantly, he's finally finished. Hope you enjoy.
