So I was offered a really good deal on a smaller ork army, and I couldn't pass it up. includes 60 boyz, 10 Lootas, 10 burnas, 5 defcoptas, 15 nobs 3 war bikes, 3 killa kans, and 2 war boss. For the boyz 10 are shoots boyz the rest have choppas and sluggas. I only paid 120$ for it all. Most of it is just base coated and what looks to be skull white. However some are painted and don't look too bad. I guess what to do next is find a good paint scheme (suggestions are welcome and encouraged) and then make the rest of the army.

So being new to 40k what should I look into getting next for this army? I know I want some more shootas for my boyz and I know I need vehicles but don't know which ones yet. Also what HQs are good? I want to turn this into a 1850 army.

So fellow ork players will you Please help?

Here is a pic of the color scheme used I like the tan used.

$120? That's a good deal!

As for what to do next, if your not sure about the paint scheme have a look online. Do you have the Ork Codex yet? If not that has to be your next purchase for sure. Have a read through it, get to know which models you like and get a rough idea for an army. Check out the rules and get to know your Boyz better.

Without knowing your preferences it's hard to suggest to you which units to buy next. However, unless you want lots of dead Boyz, get some Trukks for them too ride about in. They add a good deal of protection and are extremely Orky. They can also add some firepower to your advance too, if you equip them right. Think about how you want your army to act on the battlefield. Do you want a footslogger style army of all infantry? Or do you want a mechanised style force that streaks across the table in a cloud of smoke and flying bodywork?

Whichever you choose, you'll have fun. That's a certainty with Orks. I'd pick up some Grots too, great minis and some ablative armour saves never hurt!

Yeah, calculate points and have fun. You may well want trukks, but I've heard people having spectacluar fun with Green Tide lists.

Well I would like a mix of foot slogging troops and some vehicles. I think that I will paint them in the dead skull color scheme. I have a PDF of the codex for now until I save up to buy it. As far as units I like go, I really like Lootas, weird boyz look fun, an yeah grots look cool too. Trucks and battle wagons are the main transport right? What makes you choose one over the other?

Trukks: Put at least 4 (more is better) on the table. Then, shoot them up the board and unload. You swarm your opponent in assaults on the second turn.

Battlewagons: Put at least 2 (I prefer 4) on the table. Have a Big Mek with Kustom Force Field sit in 1 to protect all of them (5+ Cover, which is 3+ if there's night fighting on the first turn!). Equip them with Deff Rollas and Big Shootas (Possibly a Kannon, but NEVER a Kilkannon). Roll up with your AV14 facing the enemy and cackle as they panic to put it down. For added fun, add deffkoptas/dakkajets/warbikes to the mix and tie up the units that can actually take out the AV14.

Also, if you take a Weirdboy, upgrade him to a Warphead for the re-roll (really only ever to stop 'Eadbanger). I've used my Warphead a bit and he, despite being random, becomes the MVP of the game. "I wish I had a meltagun to blow up that Land Raider." (Weirdboy then spits a melta beam out of his mouth and blows it up) "I wish I could get a mob of Boyz onto that objective." (Weirdboy sucks his mob into the warp, and lands perfectly on the objective)

Need more shoota boyz and lootaz to give you some bite, but you already have an excellent start. Slugga boyz work great in a battlewagon, so they're not a loss either.

Buy yourself a few boxes of boyz and convert some lootas with whatever spare special/heavy weapons your friends don't care about. It's how I build mine, and they're easy to make from regular boyz. I just build the gun up around a slugga arm and they look really cool.

Not to mention its a lot cheaper

But yeah whenever you're building up an ork army it's always boyz before toyz. If you don't have any power klaw nobs in that lot, buy the plastic nob box. It comes with 3 and all sorts of cool bitz and gubbinz that would be a great addition to fleshing out this list.

Cool you guys are really being helpful. Next question is, are 'ard boyz any good. I love the look of them so was thinking about buying some of the upgrades GW sells.

'Ard Boyz look cool, so you should just stick them in your regular mobs.

10 point boyz with 4+ Saves aren't worth it. Just buy more boyz with those points.

You get a TON of armor plates in the Ork Boyz box and the Nobz box, so I wouldn't bother with the metal GW sets as well.

Yeah buy the nob box. You get enough shoulder armor in that to deck out almost an entire mob of boyz. Plus you get a ton more variety and options.

GW's ork kits are awesome. They're the only kits I'll buy brand new from them. They've just got so many awesome bitz and options you really can't beat them. Anything you haven't painted yet I'd wait on, till you buy a few kits. That way you've got more bitz to customize them with.

I'll restate that that was a really good deal; especially as the painting standard seems very nice.

The nice thing about 'Ard Boyz is they're usually easily played as standard Ork Boyz if you don't want to pay the extra cost, as really it's mainly just shoulder plates that make the difference.

I've used them once or twice since 5th edition and haven't been impressed, but you may come up with a way to make them work for you. No sense letting armor plating go to waste.

I armor the crap out of my boyz and nobody seems to care. They're orks. They'll nail whatever isn't nailed down to their shoulders if it looks choppy enough.

If you keep your mobs easy to tell apart (each mob has a different color scheme for example) all you have to do is say "the red mob is 'Ard boyz, rest are normal" and you're set.

I like the armor look on the boys. With out it they look so weak lol. So may be adding ard boy armor to all them. I agree that it is a very amazing deal.

I am thinking a big Mek and a weird boy for hq or should I use a warboss? Any tips on these guys. I have only briefly looked throuh the codex.

KFF meks and Warbosses are both very solid choices, probably the best two choices you can take.

KFF wins out if you're running lots of boyz.

Warboss wins out if you need more close combat killin power and want to take some nobs as troops.

Weird boyz I've never tried, but I've heard they're nowhere near as effective as warbosses and big meks are.

Sweet I will hold off on the weird boy then and just proxy him first. I love the idea of that kff. Now nobs as a troop idk if that will be extremely useful, however I guess I will know after I play a few games.

My final question for now is about deff dreads and killa kans are they any good? I like the model but reading about them in the codex makes me question their worth.

Because of the hull point system, Killa Kanz and Deff Dreads aren't worth it in my opinion. Deff Dread is AV12 3HP and Killa Kan is AV 11 2HP. They will probably die before they manage to walk across the field and attack their enemies which makes them 100+ point damage sponges.

Hopefully they beef them up quite a bit in the new Ork codex because I love the way the models look.

Lol I am not sure if I like the idea of painting the orks blue yet. Not sure if I would like it but guess I will have to do a test paint to see.
