Well, showing us a typical 1500-2000 list you run, will help.

What are the problems you find yourself running in to? Are Certain armies giving you trouble? Certain Missions?

I played a game just yesterday at 1500 versus space marines.
They had LR Assault termies and a terminator librarian Stern guard Two tac squads in rhinos and Storm talon.

I ran aproxied typhus terminators with heavy flamer
Warp talons, squad of cultist 15 pledged marine defiler and maulerfiend and my heldrake

first turn his stern guard drop podded right behind my defiler and he combat squaded so 5 combi melta was on defiler and 5 combi flamers was on my cultist
killed the defiler and half of the zombies

a few terns later his terminators killed typhus and my terminators his storm talon took out my helldrake and maulerfiend and his tac took out the warp talons before they even got there

he won on turn 4 because all that was left was a few pledged marines and I just gave up

Drop the defiler and Warp Talons, I feel they're both a huge waste of points.

You need more than just cultists running around to do anything to a decent assault units. Plague marines come to mind. T5 and FNP is wonderful .

Did you send the maulerfiend barreling straight into the LR? If not, what's wrong with you?

If they're using drop pods, and he could drop one behind your defiler, your deployment needs work on.

Plague Zombies are also no good I feel unless you're running a gunline or mech list for bubblewrap. They are slow, they are terrible in combat and no shooty.

Agreed. Come up with a core selection of your army that you would use at say 1000 points. Then when you get to higher point games and so on and keep building from that core.

Very important thing here. Make sure you know the rules and your opponents codex as good as you do your own. Too many people have been taken advantage of because of not knowing the rules. If someone says that "my army can do this or that" make sure that it is in the rules or in the codex. Read over those rules together. Just don't take his word for it.

Always play the objectives in any game you play. I have won games where I only had a few pieces on the board and my opponent had most of his army left because I had the objective in mind and he didn't.

Deplyment play a huge part too. Spreading out to thin on front or allowing your opponent any kind of advantage could hurt you big time. Sometimes castling up in a corner will work.

I have found with playing Chaos that the Defiler is too expensive. A Heldrake is a must at even at a 1k game. Well worth its points for the damage it can do and because it can be hard to kill.

Looks like you need more troops. Chaos can win without all the new shinys.

yes, drop both.

If you want your terminators in cc and aren't infiltrating them, and yes.
Just take plague Marines. And yes, if you want them to get upfield quickly.
If you want cultists, either take squads of 30+ or small squads with an aegis defense line and sit on a home objective.
Yes.

With cultists you either take a maximum sized unit as a tarpit, or a min sized unit to sit on a backfield objective and talk about life.

Obliterators are good, take a squad of 3. With Havocs you will want a full squad with Autocannons. To make autocannons, chop the barrel off a Heavy Bolter, drill a small hole, and put in a length of stir stick. You know those tiny little red straws they give you to stir your coffee with? those make good barrels.

I cut down the list of models you own to what I feel you should be using:

Some models I have:
Chaos lord
Hell Drake

Typhus and Zombies is good but take loads if you are going to use them.

Lords work well accompanied by spawn. either Khorne with blind axe or MoN lord with MoN spawn.

Helldrakes, 2 at leat if you are fielding them.

Spam the good stuff and ebay anything else.

Either spawns or Nurgle bikers (bikers with MoN). I think you should also swap one unit of Havocs for another unit of Obliterators. And give Mark of Nurgle to everything (except the Havocs maybe)! If you have the spare FoC slot (you probably won't) and points, then you can also try the Maulerfiend.

They are just simply crappy. And the they are overmatched in their FoC slot as Heldrakes, Nurgle Bikers and Nurgle Spawns are all FA.

Sadly, they are too expensive, and their gimmick ability is no good. Couple in the fact that a Heldrake is only 10 more points than squad of Warp Talons, and you end up with a No Brainer Choice.

Are you taking Baleflamers on your Heldrakes? They are the vastly superior choice. Don't forget their Vector strikes, they are perfect for popping light AV vehicles.

The Black Mace is really only good on DPs, considering the burning brand instead. You may want to drop the Termi Armor, and have him go with a squad of Plague Marines. Throw a Powerfist on him as well.

Plague Marines need special weapons, you can get 2x and a combi on the sgt, at 5 men, so take advantage of this. 10 per squad is a lot, you can put more on the table if you separate them.

You'd be better off with a standard 5 man CSM squad for manning the Quadgun.

Chaos Zombies are good, just don't really expect them to do much.

What are you equping on the Terminators? You may consider dropping the Land Raider, and deep striking them in. You could get a few more squads of Terminators for Termicide, for the cost of the Land Raider. Combi-Meltas or Combi-Plasma are really good.

For Oblits, they really need Mark of Nurgle, and VOTLW for the bump in leadership.

I tend to keep my Havoc squads a bit smaller. 5 or 6 should be ok.

I generally run depending on points

Lord w/Brand and Psword
2-3 CSM nurgle marines or plague marines (Generally double plasma for these)
Termies or Chosen depending on how I feel (5xplasma chosen)
Helturkey
Autocannon havocs (Generally unmarked, second guessing this though)
If I don't use deepstrike termies I'll use deepstrike meltaraptors for popping vehicles

All champions get a Psword and meltabombs (I have a Dread heavy meta)

Fill in points as needed

Sadly, it just tends to be better than most other choices. Some of pricing is really off for it as well. A good example is the Chaos Lord. Why they Priced the MoN and MoS the same, is beyond me. MoT just plain sucks most of the time, and it has a crappy lore. MoS isn't bad, as the Icon of Excess is pretty good. MoK is ok, but this is a shooting focused game now.

Insted of Typhus, would a chaos lord with mark of nurgle and a chaos sorcerer with mark of nurgle work just as good? Or should I just stick with Typhus?

You can't take Plague Zombies without Typhus, but if you want to shave some points then a Chaos Lord and Nurgle Sorcerer are not bad choices at all.

Typhus is cool. He can even replace the Nurgle Lord if you want a Sorcerer as a second HQ. MoN for the Sorcerer is not a bad idea (the Nurgle powers are pretty decent), but personally, I would leave him unmarked. And don't forget to upgrade your Sorcerer to at least Mastery Level 2 (ML 3 is the best if you have the points for it)!

Another very durable, powerful unit, is a Unit of Either Nurgle Bikers, or a full 10 man squad of bikers with MoS and Icon of Excess.

Give a Slaaneshi lord a Steed, and have him outflank those bikers, with Acute senses. You can cause some pain early on, and put a lot of pressure on an enemies backfield.

I like the idea of Nurgle bikers, And puts it in a fast slot and i think being able to have maneuverability is key

also drop the lord and insted have typus and a chaos sorcerer?
