It really depends on the fluff for your army. Recent AL fluff has them as being unaligned and generally wary of Chaos worship, but there is nothing stopping you from having Legionnaires who are devoted to a particular Chaos power.
If it helps, the old 3.5 edition codex had rules for AL. In it, a pure AL army could not take any Marks of Chaos except for Undivided (which obviously doesn't exist any more). Personally, I think that is a far too restrictive take on any Undivided legion, as if there was no chance of ever having an Alpha Legionnaire who worships a specific Chaos god (especially since they existed in 2nd edition). But that's just me.
In short: take whatever you like. Any combination of marks/icons can be justified with fluff, and it's your army so do what you think works best.

Ok so disregard AL for the moment which chaos god bears more beneficial properties? Slaanesh? Khorne? Tzeenth? Nurgle? It would seem Tzeenth for sorcerer. .

It really sort of depends, on a unit-by-unit basis. Nurgle is generally pretty solid, as an extra point of toughness is pretty good no matter what you put it on, while Khorne is great for units you plan to throw into combat. Slaanesh is pretty good for letting units with marine-killing weapons attack before marines get the chance to kill them, while Tzeentch is more limited, in that he really only helps units with an existing invulnerable save, and even then only against attacks that would bypass their armor.
I run an Alpha Legion list, and I generally just keep everything unmarked, just to save points and for personal fluff (no daemons, either). There's nothing wrong with giving marks to units, however, so don't feel restrained by the fluff if you want to chaos up your guys.

If you try to run an army with entirely 1 mark it is going to be a lot less competative than a mixed/no mark army.

So if you brought your AL to a 600pt doubles tourny what would be your suggestion, in the case of units?
