Say for example i joing an independant Character with a normal unit and say that IC is a beast in close combat with high WS, S and T but the unit he joined is relatively work a day, am i correct in thinking that my beast of an IC may have hits allocated to him based on the majority WS and T in the squad (the work a day units WS and T) and the only thing to protect him is a look out sir roll?

You are correct that is the way it is done but his saves will probably be better. So yes if you are worried you can LOS wounds to other models to save him. but you would take their save not his vs the wound.

ADD causes my posts to ramble from time to time. Please bear with me.

You're not a Time Lord stick with linear time.

Since hits are allocated to the closest target though if everyone is in base to base contact with the enemy you can just allocate them to plebs (all are equally close so you pick).

Well more specifically it's based on initiative. So if the other unit has a guy going at initiative 5+ (or is doing HoW attacks) but none of those guys at that initiative are in base contact with said IC in defending squad, then no attacks can be allocated to him.

You are correct in that if everyone is in base contact then it hardly matters, but it's good to point out the subtlety of the rules here and there.
