I am building a Tyranid list and would like to include some spore mines... I have a couple questions:

1. Does anyone use these as the orbital deployement method? I know there are units that fire these things but I would like to use them as a deterrent/area denial measure. Since objectives are placed before deployment and the mines would be deployed after objectives are placed. Seems like it could be a good tactic to use for the points to effect an enemy's deployment.

2. Are the mines deployed in the circle pattern as outlined in the BRB? Or is the cluster able to be split up and sewn throughout an area? Just wondering as this would determent how many I would use per fast attack slot.

I wasn't sure if this belonged in the 'You make the call' forum.... Seems like it belongs here since I am asking more of a tactics question. Thanks for any input on this issue!

Each spore is treated as a separate unit, so they are able to split off. I have used them in the past to seed ADL areas i know enemy units want to deploy into. Works well to deter anything with less than a 3+ from getting to close. Sure its probably just a temporary annoyance, but denying a group of Fire warriors that ADL for one turn of shooting is worth it..

Never underestimate the Genestealers ability to sweeping advance EVERYTHING!

So I can deepstrike them all separately?

No they deepstrike as one group then can spread out after they have been deployed

So if I'm not using all of my fast attack slots, would it be better to do a couple small groups (2-3) instead of doing a large group of 9 (I think that is the largest unit size)? That way I could try to influence more of their deployment zone....
