Long time wargammer(started back in the 70`s,heh)

Never played it back when it came out as my group was into Battletech in those days.Anyhow in the past few years ive started gearing up for this game, collecting, painting with the hope that my boys will get into it with me,they are still a bit young(oldest is 12)My nephew has played a bit with me but now hes too busy so im reaching out to the local gameshop groups and planning to get some live play in here soon

The list ive put together is hopefully not too bad as im trying out some stuff to see how its gonna work.

OrK WB with PK/BP/TL Shoota

BIg Mek with KFF

Elite-Nobs 5 Nobs 1 w/PK/BP 1w/BigChppa 3 with Slugga/choppa
Painboy with Grot orderly
Trukk RPJ/RR/big shoota (Not sure if this is the best group for the Truk though)

Elite-4 Lootas 1Mekboy with Kustom megablasta

Troop- 19 boys sluggas/choppas 1 bigshoota
Nob with PK/BP

Troop- 11 boys with Shootas 1 Big shoota
Nob with PK/BP

Troop-12 Gretchin 1 Runtherd

Fast Attack- 2 Deffkoptas TL Rockets ( Should this be 2 groups of one?..or is that pretty much giving up the first blood VP,heh)

Fortification- Imperial bastion(well "Orky bastion,I fabbed one up using the specs to an imp one, just for casual play though)

Now Im trying out the bastion mainly to sit near an objective and to provide cover for the grots as they camp said objective, also the grots can duck inside and man the HB`s with their improved bs.And as an added bonus I can put the Lootas inside or on top even for what would still be a pretty good cover save, even inside they can all fire out the front facing while being protected by AV14 goodness

So how does it look?

So far ive just practiced against my nephews Marine/imp army thats mostly just troops and the games have been very close, loosing by one point damn first blood!

I think the first thing you are gonna need are more boys. In 6th edition in seems that melee only units are not very good right now. Even if you put them in a trukk it seems that their survivability is pretty low. However, boys with shootas seem to do pretty well. IMO you are gonna need at least twice as many as you have now, probably more. Same for the Gretchin, more of them and runtherds obviously. Nobs in Trukk are okay, but if that is your only unit in a Trukk, it's gonna get shot up by everybody, you need more than one Trukk on the battlefield, otherwise that seems to be a good choice of fast attack and heavy attack. One other thing is max out Lootas, they are one of the best units in your army, you can never have enough. Just remember to keep them in some kind of cover, or by that Big Mek with the KFF. 2 Deffkoptas are great, keep them together, remember people are gonna try to shoot them up, while they're banging away at one you have another behind which should survive until it can do some damage. These are just my 2 cents worth, the most important lessons are the ones you learn from each battle you fight, and of course against different armies. The ideas I presented I believe are a good all around army, but that doesn't make it the best possible army. Good Luck and Good WAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!

Off to a good start so far, but I would just try and increase the number of bodies, especially with the koptas, i hate losing one and having them run off the board.

I like the bastion, but my experience with it has not been the best, but at 1000 pnts AV 14 can be a big deal for many armies.

For 1000pts, taking the bastion I'm fine with but 2 HQ's eat into your points too much I feel. I agree with the big mek KFF, but often it can be hard to justify the points expenditure on a warboss at 1000pts. Typically people go either fast or foot slog. For casual games I run a mix, but they dont work so well competitively. So my suggestions running through it;
Warboss, as I said earlier not a huge fan but regardless I would always get cybork body and an attack squig
Big mek, yeah
Nobs, they are a rather overpriced unit for what they can do on foot. If your thinking of whacking them in a trukk, an advisable option would be to take 5 mega-armoured nobs instead. They're not longer totally useless from slow and purposeful. RPJ isn't that necessary on a trukk if you need to save on points.
Lootas, never ever ever take a mek with the kustom mega blasta. It sucks they only come with 4 deffgun in the box set I know, but honestly the deffgun beats the KMB 10/10. The only reasonable option for the KMB is on killa kans where it wont kill themselves, and can actually hit.
Slugga boys, they only become okay when on a vehicle. They're too weak shooting wise to walk and too few will remain when they get there to capitalize on that 1 more attack. For footslogging just take shootas.
rest, fine

From what you've got, it leans more to a speed army, purely from the fewer troops and the trukk and deffkopta you've already got. For a footslogging army you probably want at least 80 or so shoota boys at 1000pts. Following the speed theme however, I would take MANs over the current nob trukkers. Then reduce the 2 boys units to 12 and chuck them on a trukk each (also make a space for the big mek in one). Then I'd probably get 5 more lootas to get a unit of 10 to go at the top of the bastion. 5 is too few to make a real dent in what they're shooting at and they run too easily. With 10 you can still voluntarily go to ground. This would give them a 3+ cover behind the bastion I think (or 2+?) and then they can snapfire afterwards which isn't a huge loss.
For the deffkoptas, probably best to keep them as 1 unit. If points permit give 1 a power klaw as that opens so many more options up even if it is only S6.

If your attack is going too well, you have walked into an ambush

The easy way is always mined
