Greetings! I hope this is allowed, but I was hoping to combine my introduction to the forums with what would be my first question. Since it's a pretty background heavy and nubbie question I figured it belonged more here.
Hopefully someone will indulge an old Veteran with some fluff, It's been around 15 years since my last battle (sometime around Ichor IV I believe) and everything today seems pretty badass as it was back in 2nd edition, fliers especially!
A few weeks ago I was going through some old stuff my parents had finally insisted I took out of my childhood home, among them were copies of White Dwarf and my collection of 40k armies.
Talking to the wife she seemed pretty interested in the painting side but eventually asked more about the mechanics of the game, a week later and lots of immersion in 2nd edition rulebooks and codex's, we thought we'd give the hobby another go.
My missus has settled on a Tau army, this army is not up for discussion as she loves their look. I believe they are harder to play than the other's? Regardless we've ordered her the Boxed army, Fire warriors, kroots, fish apc thing and a crisis suit as a, I hope, decent starter kit.
Here's the first issue, I'm struggling to choose an army, whether to take a fresh approach or one of my old ones. I have a large Blood angel army (my first obsession), that had a detachment made up of a medium sized IG army and a medium sized chaos SM army that I used to bulk up an already pretty big Ork force. I've bought Dark vengeance so I'll also have what's in the box.
What I need is some help choosing a decent army to fight a complete beginner in Tabletop gaming with. I was considering picking up my old Blood Angels but I hear they've gone crazier than they were and are now primarily a Melee focused assault force, which if I understand Tau tactics will be an easy win for me. Also it's important to note that since I was a lot younger when I started, most of the main body of my Blood Angels are pretty poorly painted so dropping them infavour of a fresh start isn't an unappealing thought. I was at one point considering going Ultramarines (I had a dislike of Space wolves from back in the day), but man, they were not liked much back in the early 90's and it seems thanks to "that guy" they are despised even more.
At the moment I'm leaning towards taking one of the armies from DV and expanding on it. But again they both seem pretty assault based.
Anyway good to not be lurking anymore as a guest and hopefully someone can offer some advice and maybe soon I can add something worthwhile to the community discussions!
TL;DR. Returning player, hasn't played since 2nd edition, playing with 100% complete beginner playing Tau. Could use army suggestion for good games and fun to be had with said beginner.

One thing about 6th ed is allies.
If you wanted to, scan through the allies chart in the 6th rulebook, and pick an army to ally with the Tau.
That way, use anyone you like, and the Tau will not be as rough to play.
If you have DA, use them as either DA or a vanilla successor chapter. Leave the majority of the chapter marking on there, and use the DA models as allies to your main army.
Eithher way, you get to use the models you have, and the Tau will not be as weak against your army as they might be.
Whatever you do though, start with 500 point games.
Anything bigger gets overwhelming for a new player, and there's nothing worse than a player who gets scared off by their first couple of games.
Ramp up bits at a time, and slot in a new unit as you go.
Anyway, welcome to both of you.

Hey folks, and thanks for the advice and welcomes!
We played through the starting mission from the DV box last night, with my missus as the DA, after seeing how easily they tore through the chaos I think we're onto a winner here with the ally rules!
With her playing Tau/DA all I need to do now is figure out what I'm gonna play, I'm thinking either Orks with Chaos (or chaos with orks) or something more out of the box like Eldar or nids (two armies I've never played)

I'm in an almost identical position to yourself, with the difference being my missus has no interest in the painting and modelling side (yet), and I'm also a Wfb fan, so I've ended up with four armies to get painted up!
I went for vanilla marines and eldar (so that she can get to grips with marines first, and I have the challenge of getting to grips with an army that's harder to use). That way, I'm hoping things are a little more balanced until she gets to grips with the rules and I get to grips with eldar.
Wfb I have high elves and orcs and gobbos to paint up. Mostly because I had a lot of old models I could recycle.
Good luck with it!
