So in a game I had a few nights ago this issue came up: If a unit assaults a vehicle and explodes it does the unit that assaulted get a cover save for being in area of terrain?

The situation arose after Mephiston assaulted a Leman Russ and ended up exploding the Russ. I felt Mephiston should get a cover save in my opponents ensuing shooting phase as he would be in the wreckage form the vehicle. My opponent disagreed because he felt the wreckage was supposed to be the exact size of the vehicle so Mephiston wouldn't be granted a cover save.

What's your guys take on the situation?

Yes, if the cover save is better than what their armor would provide.

Or do you mean do they get a cover save from the terrain created by the vehicle? If that's the case, then no.

*edit*
I see what you're saying now. And no, he wouldn't as the terrain is supposed to be the size of the vehicle. This is something that also should be determined pre-game, as a just in case.

I meant the latter, but the rule book states roughly the same size , not the exact size. So technically the wreckage could be bigger or be smaller. I only took issue with it because he was in base to base with the vehicle so he'd be on the border of area of terrain.

just make sure you bring a crater and place it so mephiston is not touching it. Its roughly the same size as the tank, not exactly the same size.

No matter the size of the crater, Mephiston is going to be outside of it. So no, he would not get a save

The vehicle explodes, and then the crater is placed. So at the time the models are hit they can't be in the crater.

The crater is placed where the vehicle was. Mephiston is next to it, not in it. They say "roughly" the same size because they want to give folks flexibility for not having a full supply of craters exactly the same size as all of their vehicles. It isn't so that models next to the vehicle can suddenly be in its crater.

If you DID play that models might or might not be in the crater, who decides? You'd have to make up rules determining who picks which crater, so who gets to decide which nearby models will wind up in it.

It's much cleaner and simpler to play that the crater is exactly the size and shape of the vehicle's hull. It circumvents problems and arguments.
