Hey i am new to warhammer and i was wondering which race would be best to play if i wanted to have long range. I hear Tau has the best range.

I agree. IG can put out punishing firepower at a very long range. Tau are good as well though.

Tau and IG are the main long range shooty armies. IG are your best bet for shooty though. Tau are good, but they are starting to show their age and the codex suffers from some pricing issues

I'd say the Imperial Guard, as both Tau and IG are good at range, but the Imperial Guard has far more variety and overall firepower.

But you shouldn't discount Orks too much.

IG or Tau most definitely. Rumors are theres a new Tau Codex in the works.

I've played with/against both and they are both a lot of fun to play/collect. You can't really go wrong. Just pick whichever looks more appealing to you.

Well the Shas'O/El (battlesuit commander) is mandatory, so that one would be a good start.

Just stay away from Aun'va (old guy on a floating chair).
