So when firing the Hive guard ignore cover saves if the opposing player is not in or touching cover. Ork bikes have a 4+ cover save from exhaust cloud. Would this be ignored? I can't determine if they are technically in or touching that cover save.

It's a cover save provided by war gear (the bike), and the Nid FAQ says to ignore cover saves provided by war gear.

I would say that the Ork bikes, since they are generating their own cover, are definitely in the cover

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

Except they are not in or touching terrain that lies between them and the hive guard.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

As an Ork player who plays against Nids quite frequently, I'll just add that all these FAQ rulings that have improved Hive Guard to ridiculous levels make my green blood boil. I suppose I should count myself lucky that GW hasn't just FAQed the weapon with the "Ignores Cover" special rule.

For 50 points you get a T6 creature with 2 wounds. It fires an Assault 2 S8 AP4 weapon at 24" range that doesn't need LoS to fire. Before it was FAQed it was already strong because it essentially skirted around any cover between it and the target. You couldn't take cover from intervening models or terrain. You could only get terrain cover if you were touching it and it was between you and the Hive Guard, or if you were in Area terrain.

Then they FAQed it... twice... to say that in addition to all that, you can't take cover saves from ANY wargear.

They made it such a good unit and so undercosted for what it can do that there's very little reason for any Tyranid player to not take a full 3 Broods of 3 of them in nearly every game, unless you really want that Elite slot for something else.

It makes my Warbikes and my KFF cry with anguish. I guess it's not as bad for all you 3+ armies out there, since for the most part all you lose is your Smoke Launchers.

Rant over.

YAY... we get one cool unit !!! But it seriously needs Ignore Cover to avoid some of the dumb situations that can come up over whether a unit has cover or not from the HG.

I like having cool units.

The only cover save ignoring rule that bikers or KFF avoid is the whole blast coming from within your cover (if it goes boom in a cater, you dont get the save for being in the crater) because bikers and kff do not have an origin point for their cover, so it cant be weaseled around.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

A blast striking a unit in a crater will get a cover save, even if its barrage.

Area Terrain is not cancelled out by barrage.

One cool unit? Just about everything i see Nids deploy have some annoying rule that lets them pull of lame stunts. They dont even fall back as the Fearless bubble basically covers the board with it coming from 2-4 models and if they do they just scuttle away to cover and regroup. Any idea how annoying it is having 8 Lootas run off the board because i failed my damn leadership test? Or for that matter, having my group of bikes with a biker boss lose the test after a combat by 1 wound and getting sweeping advanced? I'd gladly exchange going to ground for basically perma army-wide fearless.
And dont even get me started on Tyrants.

If your Tyranid opponent has "permanent army wide fearless" you're playing the game wrong.

And if you really think Synapse isn't a burden as much as an advantage, pick 5 units in your army and then make sure that - for the entire game - you literally never have the rest of your models more than 12" away from those units. And make sure your opponent knows this - also try not to make all of them ICs. 2 at most.

Blow that Synapse model away and see how "cool" those Nids are.

Seriously, and they don't have killer stats either on the average. Only the Tyrant and Tervigon have much survivability, but no invul saves. Lose Synapse and almost every "cool" unit becomes useless.

Hide behind wall, shoot without being shot, go on different levels of ruins if they have barrage. cuz yeah, that should be 50 points. If i were playing nids i would be using 6 with a doom every game.
