Deadly Dire Avenger

my friend almost exclusively plays Space Wolves and I can never seem to beat him because even his basic marines (grey hunters) are better in combat most of the time than my assault marines. Also, he spams razorbacks, rhinos, and long fangs. What should I do?!!!?!!!?
what units could I use and how should I use them to counter these kinds of lists?

Ofcourse flyers is the bane of space wolves as well as low mobility, take fliers and things with high mobility to out maneuver him. Im not familiar with BA codex but get things that:

1. kills of his long fangs as a first priority, they need to be dead so you can travel on the board.

2. pop his viechles so that he travels even slower, so you can out maneuver him. (I would say aim for the viechles with most troops in)

Thunderwolves which is usually a problem is taken care of with small arms fire (alot and lots of bolters) rather than strong weaponry.

are you remembering hammer of wrath on your jump units? they have very high mobility so try to go around his unit and charge from the point of his banner wielding guy. its the banner which allows rerolls so by hopefully killing him quickly you have a much bigger chance of winning the assault. one thing can also be to trick him into using his banner by place yourself like if you are going to attack. when he takes the bait you dont attack but wait for the turn to pass, its one use per game so then you dont have that problem anymore.

SW are a very strong army, but you have a lot more mobility. It's true that 10 Grey Hunters are just as good as 10 Assault marines in HTH, but if you can hit them with two squads with an attached priest to give furious charge (and maybe a libby/chappy for rerolls?) you can still wipe them out. Try to focus fire on the long fangs and transports, and use terrain and your mobility to get him to a place where you can have local force superiority. Stormravens and CC Dreadnoughts can also tear his units apart.

It's going to come down to how you use your units. SW are strong in areas where BA are not, which makes them great allies and a tough matchup.

Hit the Long Fangs first, pop vehicles, and charge. SW tend to be similar in build, RP LFs and GH in rhinos, so take out your biggest threats first. LFs can ruin any marines day, as well as any light vehicles day, while the RP can also pop vehicles with living lightning. You also have Furious Charge if you have the red thirst on a unit, so drown him in dice. More dice, more kills. Same tactics are good against termies.

Look to your specialist units to win combats, and try and keep your basic assault marines alive for objectives. Death Company and Sanguinary Guard are great against pretty much everything except thunderwolves and terminators. But if your opponent has those that's a lot of points tied up in units you can try and avoid with your jump packs.

Also, if he uses Long Fangs take a small vanguard squad to keep em busy. They don't have to win, the Sergeants power sword should give them enough of an edge to be able to at least tarpit them out of taking part in the rest of the game.

Lastly, blendernaughts are always good against power armour. Take 2 so they're less likely to be murdered before they can get in close.

It's just really hard to overcome the grey hunter factor. You will run out of BA specialists quickly to grey hunter special weapons, and the hunters can take on BA assault marines trivially. And they will outnumber you in general. It's pretty much a nightmare matchup all around. Assuming the opponent knows what he's doing.

Well i am sorry to say, but tylker, you got his list wrong XD. I am the person he is trying to beat lol but that is besides the point. i use 3 foot slog squads of GH with some TWC and recently a vindicator. Alot of the time i grab 2 rhinos as well.

I have 3 solutions

1) Play SW and not BA, problem solved

OR

2) 2 squads of assult marines, and any HQ w a jump pack, the rest of your points should be spent on SW allies

OR (youll really like this one)

3) Put your devs on TWC, and sprint them down the field to snap fire missiles at the razorbacks and then assault. Deep strike Land Raiders to distract HIS twc while your death company dreadnaught gets into CC with grey hunters. Then attach 4 frasian wolves to the front of an Assault squad to act as a fire soak. give the wolves jet packs so this is actually an option. Now you take a whirlwind and shoot it at YOUR OWN land raider, hoping the scatter will his his wolves. If you're still reading this you need to sell your army and see option 1. Because clearly youre too desperate to even think of a tactical way to beat this kid.

Missile Launcher is S8 and AP3, therefore 5 Missile Launcher Longfangs can kill ~3 Assault Marines with FNP a turn.

Space wolves also should have a higher model count, and therefore, more guns to shoot with.

When I play as space wolves, I feel like 2+ saves and elite cc can be very troublesome for missile/razor spam. Give Mephiston or Thss a try, they should be able to soak enough fire, or get enough kills to make up their points against that type of list.
