So I was looking at Ripper Swarms in the codex, and they are quite clearly, rubbish. But where they ever good? They just seem like a unit that is purely in the codex, for the fluff of it.

Well, I encountered some once, and suffice to say they were an annoyance to be sure. They just kept going to ground until they got close to me and tied up my squads. I had no flamers on hand.

Hmm that doesn't sound right.

You cant go to ground if you are fearless and Tyranids are fearless in Synapse. Also rippers outside of Synapse kill themselves.

I really didn't like that guy too. This was at a tourny. Huh.

I've never played at a tourney but do they have people who supervise (witness) the games?

Fearless units could go to ground under 5th edition, just not 6e

Also Rippers are basically a comedy unit. You get better overall attacks/wounds for your points by taking Hormaguants, who can at least claim objectives. If nothing else they should get Rending.

It would be nice if the rules for Swarms weren't so silly. The no-scoring restriction negates pretty much the whole point of having them in a Troops slot. It would be pretty cool to see Swarms get Eternal Warrior, with the exception of template weapons which cause ID on them instead.

The only real reason to use them in 6th is pairing them with the Parasite of Mortrex, who is actually fairly good (but not as much as Swarmlord/Tyrant/Prime).

3 editions ago the winged version was a great tar pit unit. Now they're garbage.

As with everything else it depends on your opinion. I have 9 bases which I often use in bigger games. They are an excellent tarpit and can be highly effective if used correctly. I often use them in a pivoting assault, where the pivot is on one flank the rippers are used as the hinge which given their incredible difficulty in being shifter makes them an ideal anchor unit to deny territory. They block gaps and really annoy the enemy.
