With the new Melta rules in 6th edition these seem very lethal, has anyone tried an army based around these?

Did it in 5th. I assume it is equally viable in 6th, the only problem being HP's on dreads allowing them to die easier (imo)

Vulkan MoTF and drop pods ftw.

The coin has a backside. Once your drop pod comes out they will shoot the dreadnought right back with melta.

I tryed having 2/3 dreadnoughts in my MSU DP SW list for a period back in 5th edition and it was hard to get it to work with the dreads. They are very good once the battle has been fought a bit as they are alergic to melta. However, melta, plasma cannon and heavy flamers are good weapons to have on them. For SW wolf guard is a better melta delivery system.

If you have acces to dreads that can take 2 meltas then you are in for a treat (ironclad?) Also, since DP is all about slugging it out I would also recomend having hunter misiles for ekstra mpf.

What's always scared me from doing Dread/Drops is I don't like swapping pieces (to borrow a chess phrase) Unless it's a Broodlord or some such, I don't like to do it. But with the AP bonus for a MM at short range the idea is a little more palatable.

Yeah it's a lot of points for what would be a one-trick pony in a lot of cases. Sure you'll likely get that one vehicle, but whatever is inside will probably own your dread where it stands a unfortunately high amount of the time.

I suspect most walkers are best relegated to a long-ranged fire support roll in 6th; they are just too easily destroyed if they try to get up close and personal.

I much prefer deploying dreads normally, and stomping forward with them. I find that any unit that does a "behind the lines" deepstrike move rarely survives another turn. If all you want is a delivery system for a melta gun there are much cheaper ways to do it.

I love getting dreads into CC, and since they can't assault after their pod insertion...

As with most units, go big or not at all.

I run a 7-8 Dread in Pods list with my BAs. I works okay, I do lose a few initially to counter melta, but that is why you bring more than 1 or 2.

I play 2 space marine players that drop an ironclad dread in on me turn 1. I love it. Proper deployment forces it to where I want it to be so I can minimize casualties and kick it over dead the next turn. I'll echo the statement of go big or go home with drop pod dreads. In a full drop pod list, they're amazing. If you're sacrifice bunting it, YMMV.
