Probably work

I'm getting a friend of mine involved in 40k. He's been interested for a while, but poor student status prevents him from just diving in. Since I have more marines than sense, I was going to toss some of mine his way.

The question is what? I have an old AoBR tac squad and a on-sprue squad I was going to start with, as well as a razorback, so he has the basics there, but what odd bitz are there that can you think of that veteran players have tons of that a new player might not have enough of starting out?

Are you giving them to him, or just allowing him to use them until he can afford a big enough force to play with? I've been helping a friend of mine get into 40k by lending him my armies to play with. We've started to do a few proxy games to give him the opportunity to really decide on an army before he goes out and spends hundreds of dollars on a force. If you go the first route, maybe ask him what kind of units he likes the most and depending on expense you can give him those (probably don't want to be giving away land raiders).

If you're going with the second route, you can basically lend him whatever he needs.

Well, he's free to borrow anything of mine he needs to use at any given time, but the stuff I had mentioned above was intended to be his to keep. Reason I picked the tac squads and razor is because (in addition to me already having a surplus of them) those seem to be staples in just about any marine army you pick.

When I say "odd bitz", I was thinking about stuff like spare bolters, shoulder pads, that kind of stuff.

Well if he's eventually going to be buying his own units as well, the kits always come with all the bits he needs, so unless you have enough spare bits to make up full troopers, he'll probably have what he needs. It is possible that he may need more melta guns/plasma guns. I know that is the thing my CSM are always lacking. We only get one of each in a box of 10 guys. Not sure how it is for our loyalist "brothers"
