Killing a Quad Gun?
I managed to place a Land Speeder in front of a Quad Gun and hit it with the Multi-melta causing a would.
My opponent rolled for the wound and failed it then said it just lost a wound, this surprised me as the QG has no Invulnerable save and I thought it should have been removed from play immediately,
Then my opponent said it was a cover save, I said the QG is on a mount and sits above the Defense line at the same height as the skimmer, True Line of Sight would give it no cover but I accept that it is behind the line so he could claim a save but the gun failed the save.
Should the gun go or not?

Well they have 2 wounds and T7, so 1 wound wouldn't do it. And if TLOS says no save, then there is no cover save to be had, but the shot still would not have removed it, unless a wound had been done earlier in the game

You said that the gun was mounted on a base. Would the base have been there if the gun was not? If no then the base is part of the gun.

But if a model fails a wound save from a S8 AP1 weapon, is it not removed from play no matter what?
I find it odd that the Quad Gun has wounds, not an armour value. It caused a lot of discussion at the table tonight.
Having T7 W2 S3+ but A- makes it an odd beast, a save but no armour value you would think the MM would take it out with one shot.

The Quad gun gets a cover save behind the Aegis Defense Line or Bastion if on one. The only way to avoid this is if the weapon shooting is shooting at the quad gun from behind the aegis or a point where the the shot would not go through the line, then they would not get a cover save. Cheers all

nope.
"instant death" works on double toughness, not necessary "strength 8"
It just so happens that the majority of space marine units and characters are toughness 4 and so tend to be removed.

When does S8 AP1 insta kills something?
S8 only IDs on T4 or below, if it is a melta rule then that's different.
AP1 now just makes the damage results higher, and ignores any armor save.

I too always thought the base the gun sits on was part of the gun.
The tricky part about it receiving the cover save is that 25% of the 'model' has to be obscured from the firer's view to be able to obtain a cover save. So if your Land Speeder was close enough, it not hard to imagine that with the height of the Land Speeder, that you had a clear LOS to more than 25% of the entire thing, unless it was either right up against the AGL wall or had models from the unit obscuring it.
Either way, you would have to hit it a 2nd time to kill it since the Melta doesn't insta squish it. Unless there is something I missed about AP1 weapons wrecking it?

The Quad-gun is a 2 wound T7 model with a 3+ armor. Cover saves may apply.

Just out of boredom i tested it, "short" hight wise part of the wall vs LR i don't think it would get a cover save however if it were behind a taller part of the wall, it is more then 25% covered.
Follow up, guad gun base is 2 inches meaning you can have a guy on either side of it from 2 separate armies but, can you be in b2b with the gun if you are on the far side of the ADL?

I've killed them with snake bites from Zogwort before, and with whatever goop painboys keep in their syringes..
They don't last long against Splinter fire either..

The Gun is a separate terrain piece from the ADL, so you need to be in contact with it, not with the ADL.
The bottom part is also quite big/bulky, so if it's flush against the defense line it should nearly always get a cover save (especially if you put it against the taller viewport bit of the line).
