I took the plunge into 40k and bought the Dark Vengeance set. I've got a few questions:
Is there any way I can combine the Dark Angels and Chaos Space Marines into one army? Preferably into a Space Marine army with something like "These chaos space marines fight their warped-ness in order to be regular space marines" or something. If that doesn't work, could I play my Dark Angels as Chaos Space Marines? Or, more general, can I play my Dark Angels as regular ol' Space Marines?
Is it dumb to create your own chapter? If I play my Dark Angels as regular space marines, is it dumb to come up with my own paint scheme and chapter name? I assume it's do-able, I just thought maybe it was the kind of thing that you could do but no one actually did.
That's all I got for now. I'm sure there's more to follow.
Thanks, guys.

I can see how to convert them into chaos space marines from Space marines... but not the other way, Greenstuff and conversion work is your friend!

So what would my Dark Angels figurines be in terms of the CSM codex? I've got a company master, a librarian, a tactical squad, a deathwing terminator squad, and a ravenwing bike squadron.
What about creating an original chapter? Is that looked down upon?

It's perfectly acceptable to create your own chapter. You can use the Dark Angel stuff as chaos if you want, the tactical marines can be chaos marines (can't have a plasma cannon though), the librarian can be a sorcerer, the deathwing terminators can be chaos terminators, the bikes can be chaos bikes and the company commander can be a chaos lord.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

No new chapter is looked down upon.
Using the forces of chaos as your ally is heresy however and should not be done unless you actually are a Chaos player using the DA's as recently converted to the darker side.

As others have said, Chaos minis as loyalists just wont work, other way around is doable. There is a Faction of Dark Angels known as Fallen Angels who turned traitors during the Horus Heresy, so you could easily use your DA models to represent those.
However, If you like the loyalist side more (as it sounds), I strongly recommend finding someone who also got DV box and wants Chaos to trade your chaos figs for more Dark Angels. Choose an army concept you really like, do not base the decision solely on the miniatures you currently have.
And creating your own chapter is great fun.

As others have said, turning loyalists to chaos is doable (just get some modeling putty and chaos bitz and you can convert them to the dark side!). Chaos to Loyalist... not so much.
Another option is to pick one, and trade the other team to someone who got the box and plays that team. OR you could always sell them on ebay.
Paint them up however you want! My army uses A LOT of DA models because I love their bitz, but I have them painted up purple and grey (I double dip and use them as C:SM and DA).
