Trying to decide between the two armies as a space marine army.

So what is good about the two armies and which one do you guys think is the better choice?

Dark Angels. They just now got updated, so you have a good codex, with new models, written for the current edition.

Black Templars just kind of suck right now, because they are the oldest codex. There is no indication of an update anytime soon either.

Rules wise, I can't help you much, since I don't play either one.

Green is a much easier color to paint than black, however. (If you want it to look good. If you want a 3-color, bare minimum effort job, then black is easier.) Shading is much harder on black, and green is one of the easiest colors to apply well. In that regard the point goes, in my opinion, to the Dark Angels.

Fluffwise, I think the Dark Angels have some more depth to their backstory. Not saying it's better or worse, just that I think it has more depth.

Appearance wise, I think the Dark Angels have better looking bits than the Black Templars, but not by much. Not by much at all.

The final note that I have is fan-wise. I've never met an annoying, 'mychapteristhebestslobberslobberreadmyfanfic' player with a Black Templars army. I've met a few of them with Dark Angels armies. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Finally, fiction-wise, I've only read a couple of short stories that feature either of the two of these Chapters, and one novel (Fallen Angels). I have personally never read a single piece of Dark Angels fiction that I enjoyed. The few Black Templars pieces I've read were above average, but not phenomenal. So point for Black Templars.

So, my personal scorecard comes down with 3-2 in favor of the Dark Angels. Take that for what it's worth. Good luck picking your army, and I hope you're happy with whatever choice you make.

Do you want spoonfed victories with a bandwagon codex or do you want to earn bragging rights with an old codex? Easy as that really.

Dark Angels is hardly a bandwagon codex, and they won't be spoonfed victories. This isn't IG or SW.

Lets not forget the biggest band wagon of them all!

Grey Knights!

I doubt any codex will be that powerful again. I would not be suprised if they came out with a white dwarf update that changes half the codex rules to Nerf it back to a respectable playing level.

When a codex spoon feeds you victories over SW , Eldar and IG. You KNOW there has got to be something wrong with it.

Grey knights are not top tier anymore and are worse then IG, SW and necrons. Also Eldar? Bahahaha! You rate eldar as a top tier codex? LOL.
To the op as it has been covered already: dark angels have lots of shiny new toys and new rules but Black Templars are 40k on hard mode do if that's your thing then I would go them.

Dark Angels - when you want to field entire army of Terminators or Bikes, with LOT of plasma.

Black Templars - when you want to crush your enemies by charging at them with thousand angry crusaders and tearing them apart n close combat, horde army basically.

Codex wise Dark Angels just got 6'th edition update while Black Templars are still in 4'th edition, with indications that their new codex will go out in 2014 it is better to take Dark Angels now. If you look at that like this.

Fluff wise they are both awesome, Dark Angels being secret and huntign Fallen with heroes like Samael who was able to dodge several Battlesuits and kill Tau Ethereal and thus ending Tau invasion of a planet or Black Tempalrs who are on never-ending Crusade ( basically the yjust continued Great Crusade ) of spreading the Emperor's word and law and having characters like Grimdalus who had entire cathedral fall on him and survive just because he didn't feel like dying..

I hope you will enjoy in whatever army you choose.

Seer Councils were scary two editions ago. Any ignores cover weapon is going to laugh all over those Pathfinders. Eldar are hardly top-tier.
