Hi,

I've recently been painting some Space Marines. Getting more and more back in to the hobby. Most of the paints have changed quite a lot since I first started, but I'm also trying to follow advice from here to improve from when I was a youngster (water the paints down before I use them etc.). But there's a couple of paints that seem to bother me. Skull white and Bleached bone always seem to go on like Tipex (liquid paper) and either need thick coats or they just spread out too much and actually have no coverage at all. I've tried watering these paints down yet they still seem to do exactly the same. Has anyone experienced anything like this? How would I deal with it? On a similar note, my Dark Angels Green actually seems too thin already and acts like a wash! Is it just a case of being more patient with this and applying multiple layers?

I'm trying to go through decent articles and tutorials on this site to improve my painting and technique, so if anyone has any other links please share.

Many Thanks

Yeah, pretty much. Most bright colors like white, yellow, etc. are infamously hard to paint and require multiple layers to get decent coverage. GW's "base" paints are supposed to go on in fewer coats like the old foundations I think, but they all kinda do it.

Ah I see, so in theory with the newer paints, I would go base->layer->n(layers)->dry/glaze for highlights/shadows. Still learning the watering down process. But I guess that's just a case of trial and error as I go. Sounds silly but I think the mixing of the water is one of the most frustrating parts! I guess the paints strike me as expensive for how much you get, and in the process of transferring some to a palette I almost feel like I'm losing some money as invariably there is some wastage!

The new Ceramite White is a good base, but is quite thick. It will still take a few coats to really get it white though.

I usually paint a light grey on first, like Deneb Stone (a very very light grey) to provide coverage.
